Igberaese's Big 52-6 Shot Put PR Headlines NCAA Preliminary Round Day 2
5/27/2021 12:00:00 AM | Track and Field
On the sixth and final throw of her two-event Thursday, Liberty's Chelsea Igberaese uncorked a big personal-best 52-6 mark in the shot put. That placed her 19th overall, representing Liberty's best event finish on a light second day of action at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet at Visit Jax Track at Hodges Stadium.
Igberaese's day did not start off on the right foot, as she fouled all three of her attempts in the women's hammer. About three hours later, the junior gained a measure of redemption in the shot put ring.
Igberaese's third shot put attempt measured 52-6, shattering her previous personal best of 51-5.75 that had been set at the same facility, 13 days prior at the ASUN Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Igberaese now ranks No. 2 in program history and No. 3 all-time in the ASUN, trailing only teammate Naomi Mojica (Liberty and ASUN-record 53-0.75 from April 10) and Jacksonville's Sade Meeks, who reached 52-8 for 17th place in Thursday's competition.
Mojica, the reigning ASUN indoor and outdoor women's shot put champion, came in 27th on Thursday with a top mark of 50-8.25 in her third NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round appearance.
Also competing for the Lady Flames on the opening day of women's competition were Mackenzie Hainley (35th in women's javelin, 144-3) and Taylen Langin (44th in women's pole vault, 12-4.5).
