Notable Numbers
- Notre Dame outhit the Lady Flames 4-2 for the game, with Liberty committing two errors. The Fighting Irish left four on base, while Liberty stranded one.
- Holloway (4-2) earned the victory, allowing one run on two hits, striking out two and walking one. She helped out her own cause, batting 1-for-3 with a home run.
- McKenzie Wagoner (1-1) drew the loss, yielding two runs on three hits, striking out two in 2 2/3 innings. Karlie Keeney gave up one run on four hit, walking one in 4 1/3 innings of relief.
- Emma Clark went 2-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and one run scored for Notre Dame, while also stealing her 11th base for the season.
- Amber Bishop-Riley went 1-for-3 with her team-leading fifth homer of the season, while Kara Canetto batted 1-for-3.
Turning Point
- Notre Dame's defense set the tone early, as Leea Hanks robbed leadoff batter Autumn Bishop of extra bases in the first inning with a diving catch. Later, holding a 2-1 lead in the fourth, the Fighting Irish turned a sharp 3-6-4 double play to get out of trouble.
- Amber Bishop-Riley sliced the deficit in half with a fourth-inning homer and Canetto then singled. Those were Liberty's only two hits of the game.
- Notre Dame tacked on an insurance run in the sixth off of reliever Keeney before Holloway shut the door. All told, the Fighting Irish right-hander retired each of the last 11 batters she faced.
Beyond the Box Score
- Notre Dame improves to 5-1 all-time against Liberty in softball.
- Notre Dame is the first unranked nonconference opponent to defeat Liberty inside Liberty Softball Stadium since Central Michigan did so on Feb. 15, 2018, over three years ago. In the meantime, Liberty had gone 33-0 in its last 33 home games against unranked nonconference opponents.
- Liberty saw its 19-game home winning streak snapped, losing at Liberty Softball Stadium for the first time since a 7-2 loss to Lipscomb on March 24, 2019. The Lady Flames came into the weekend with the third-longest active home winning streak in NCAA Division I softball, trailing only Drake and Boston University.
- The Lady Flames had gone 8-0 in their last eight home games against ACC opponents prior to tonight. Virginia Tech was the last ACC team to down Liberty at Liberty Softball Stadium, doing so on April 18, 2017.
- Liberty had beaten 17 straight unranked opponents, dating back to last season, prior to tonight.
- Bishop-Riley needs five more homers to pass Jessica Moore (58 from 2005-07) for the program career home run record. Five more homers would also give her an unprecedented five seasons with 10 or more home runs. She leads Arizona's Jessie Harper 5-2 in the race to see who can become the first NCAA Division I softball player with five 10-homer seasons.
Up Next
The Lady Flames will host former Big South rival Radford on Wednesday at 4 p.m., continuing Liberty's 11-game homestand.
