Liberty's Makenzy Mizera stole the show on a successful Saturday at the Bob Pollock Invitational with a program record-breaking 42-8 triple jump. The junior became the first Lady Flame to triple jump 13 meters, indoors or out, during the final day of competition at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.
Mizera saved her record breaker for the sixth and final round, demolishing her own program record of 41-10.75, set at the 2020 USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. The 42-8 hop, skip and jump was good for fourth place in the event, No. 2 in ASUN Conference history and No. 14 on this year's NCAA Division I national list.
Behind Mizera, teammates Adrianna Mitchell and Luize Velmere recorded matching marks of 38-10.25 for seventh and eighth place, respectively.
Liberty recorded runner-up finishes in both of Saturday's shot put competitions, beginning with Naomi Mojica's second-place effort in the women's event. The senior reached a season-best 49-7 on the day and was joined in the top five by Chelsea Igberaese (fifth place, 46-5.25).
Defending ASUN champion Kyle Mitchell's shot put season debut resulted in a second-place showing with a mark of 60-7.25. Fellow Jamaican Warren Barrett made a successful Liberty debut, reaching 58-5.25 for fifth, while reigning ASUN Field Athlete of the Week Jose Ballivian took seventh at 56-6.5.
Barrett's mark ranks No. 5 in ASUN history and No. 6 all-time for the Flames. Three of the top five indoor men's shot putters in ASUN Conference history are part of Liberty's current team, including Mitchell (No. 1), Ballivian (No. 4) and Barrett (No. 5).
Another Flame making his first-ever appearance on Liberty's all-time top 10 list on Saturday was Jeremiah McCants in the men's triple jump. He now ranks No. 8 in program annals at 48-4.5 after adding more than a foot to his previous best while coming in 10th in the event.
Rounding out the field events, Liberty got top-10 finishes in all three of Saturday's vertical jumps. Anders Janes matched a season-best pole vault clearance of 15-7 for sixth place, while Abby Thorpe's season-best 5-3 high jump put her in a tie for ninth. In the men's high jump, Quinten Clay tied ASUN leader Sultan Simms (Kennesaw State) for fifth at 6-8.75, while freshman Gabriel Willis topped out at 6-6.75 to share seventh place.
Ally Kipchirchir continued a strong start to his junior season with an indoor personal-best 800 time of 1:52.34 for fourth in the event and seventh in program history. Noah Tindale also recorded an indoor best (1:53.40) to place sixth in the four-lapper.
In the women's 800, Naomi Armstrong raced to eighth place with a season-best 2:13.67 clocking.
Running the 200 for the first time since his record-breaking 20.99 effort at the 2020 ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships, Christian Lyon crossed the line in 21.49 for a sixth-place finish.
