Past ASUN weight throw champions John Hicks and Chelsea Igberaese each garnered runner-up finishes in the event on Friday at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex, headlining the home team's results on the second day of the Liberty Elite Invitational.
Hicks closed his abbreviated freshman season with an ASUN men's weight throw title in 2020. On Friday, he began his sophomore campaign by placing second with a 59-4 heave, the top mark by an ASUN thrower thus far in 2021.
Classmate Stuart Folkerts followed Hicks in third place with a big breakthrough performance. Folkerts' top mark of 55-2.25 added more than three feet to his previous best of 51-11.25.
Igberaese, the 2019 ASUN women's weight throw champion, posted a conference-leading mark of 59-5.75 on Friday for second place in the event and first among collegiate entrants. Teammate Naomi Mojica added a third-place finish at 58-1.75.
Sophomore Cole Peterlin closed out his first career heptathlon in fourth place with 4,755 points, yet another conference-leading mark. He opened his day with a personal-best 8.36 clocking in the 60 hurdles. Peterlin later clocked a 3:00.71 1,000 to overtake two-time Big South decathlon champion Gabriel Stainback of High Point for the top spot among collegiate entrants in the competition.
Naomi Armstrong came in fourth in Friday's unseeded section of the women's pole vault with a 10-11.75 clearance.
