The Liberty Flames women's lacrosse team will open its 2020 season on the road against the Oregon Ducks, Saturday.
First draw between the Lady Flames (14-5, 5-1 ASUN in 2019) and Ducks (3-15, 1-9 Pac-12) is slated for 4 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m. Pacific) at Papé Field in Eugene, Ore.
This will the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Liberty has a pair of victories over Pac-12 opposition, with both wins coming against Arizona State during the 2018 (15-5 victory) and 2019 (14-7 victory) campaigns.
Lady Flames News and Notes
- Liberty's 2020 roster features eight seniors, four juniors, 10 sophomores and 12 freshmen.
- Seniors Carly White (midfielder), Hannah Quast (midfielder) and Grace Fletcher (attacker) are the Lady Flames' team captains, this season.
- White and fellow senior Sarah Steenson were both named to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference team.
- Liberty is coming off a 2019 season in which it established a new program record with 14 victories and posted a 5-1 mark in its inaugural season in the ASUN Conference. The Lady Flames finished second in both the regular season standings and at the ASUN Lacrosse Championship.
- Liberty wrapped up last season at No. 31 in the NCAA Women's Lacrosse RPI, its best ledgering to end a year in program history. Oregon finished 87th in the RPI a season ago. However, the Ducks defeated ASUN champion Jacksonville in 2019.
- Liberty featured six ASUN All-Conference awards honorees a season ago: White (first team), Brianna McCaffrey (first team), Kayla Foster (second team and All-Academic), Katherine Widrick (second team), Steenson (second team), Quast (second team) and Hope Flack (All-Freshmen team).
- For a second straight season, the Lady Flames finished first in the country in caused turnovers per game (15.79).
- Liberty's 2019 season opened in impressive fashion, as the Lady Flames defeated the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 15-5 in Bethlehem, Pa. The Lady Flames are 4-6 all-time in season openers but have won their last two.
- The Lady Flames return 66 percent of their scoring (186-of-282 goals) from a season ago. Jenna Joyal (39 goals), Anna Keebler (37 goals) and White (37 goals) are the top three returning scorers.
- Liberty was among the top 20 teams in the country in ground balls per game (No. 8, 21.53), scoring margin (No. 13, 5.00) scoring defense (No. 14, 9.11), shots per game (33.63) and scoring offense (No. 20, 14.11)
- Liberty paced all ASUN squads a season ago with 10 weekly award winners, between offensive and defensive player of the week recognitions.
