LFSN's Nick Pierce caught up with Liberty Men's Soccer Head Coach Jeff Alder to take a look at the Flames' preparation for the 2018 season and preview the season opener with North Greenville. Their conversation is above.
Liberty Notables
- Liberty enters its first season as a member of the ASUN Conference. The Flames will play their first ASUN contest on Sept. 13 at Stetson.
- Friday's contest will begin the 44th year of Liberty men's soccer. The contest between Liberty and North Greenville will be the first ever meeting for the two teams on the pitch.
- Liberty posted a 10-6-1 overall record in 2017. The Flames enter 2018 having posted 10 or more wins in eight of the last 11 seasons.
- The Flames have won their last five season openers.
- Liberty returns eight starters from last season's team and 14 players who played in 10 or more contests in 2017.
- The Flames return their top two scorers from last season in Kevin Mendoza and Tresor Mbuyu. Both players were named to the Big South All-Conference first team each of the past two seasons. Mbuyu was also selected the conference's Attacking Player of the Year in 2016.
- Liberty was picked to finish in sixth place in the 2018 ASUN Preseason Men's Soccer Poll. Mendoza and Mbuyu were named to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference team.
- Head Coach Jeff Alder is in his 18th season at the helm of his alma mater.
