Liberty women's soccer closed out its non-conference schedule on the road at James Madison, Thursday evening. The Lady Flames struggled to develop a rhythm on offense, as the Dukes prevailed for the 2-1win. Liberty ends non-conference with a 2-5-2 record.
James Madison's backline did an exceptional job of keeping Liberty from goal throughout the evening. The Lady Flames attempted seven shots in the contest. James Madison attempted 13 shots with four on goal led by Haley Crawford with three shots. Liberty's lone shot on goal of the night resulted in a score. Abigail Persson netted her second goal of the season during the 85th minute.
It was a slow start for both offenses as one shot was attempted in the first 19 minutes of action. James Madison converted on its second shot attempt of the game. Christine Tack scored from eight yards out at 19:11 for a 1-0 host advantage.
Liberty did not attempt its first shot until the 26th minute. The Dukes frustrated Liberty's attack, controlling possession during the first half. James Madison attempted seven shots in the first 45 minutes with three on goal.
Once the second half got underway, Liberty started to gain more possession time, firing three shots during the first 12 minutes of the half. While the Lady Flames still struggled to get a shot on goal, the Dukes extended their lead in the 64th minute off a Ginger Deel goal.
Thursday's matchup against the Dukes concluded the Lady Flames' non-conference schedule, as they now gear up for Big South action. The Lady Flames will be battled tested heading into conference play due to their challenging schedule. In the nine games Liberty played during its non-conference schedule, eight of the teams have posted winning records. Liberty was picked to finish first in the Big South preseason poll and looks to defend its title beginning on Saturday, Sept. 23, when they host Gardner-Webb. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
