Liberty sophomore Alicia Finnigan solidified her position among the nation's leaders in the 200 fly, swimming a program and conference-record time on Sunday at the Bulldog Last Chance Meet at Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Down to her last chance, she swam a lifetime-best 1:56.15 in finals of the 200 fly. That time likely guarantees Finnigan's selection to the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships. Her time of 1:56.15 ranks 30th among all NCAA Division I swimmers, with 38 competitors being invited per individual event.
The 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championship will take place March 15-18 in Indianapolis, Ind. The selections will be announced by the NCAA on Wednesday.
Today, Finnigan broke Jess Reinhardt's program record of 1:56.79, set on Feb. 22, 2014. Finnigan's time also lowered the conference record, previously set by Florida Gulf Coast's Christina Kaas Elmgreen (1:56.24) on Feb. 15, 2017.
Finnigan won the 200 fly at the 2017 CCSA Championships last Saturday, in 1:57.08. She will now almost certainly become the fourth Lady Flame all-time to be invited to compete in an individual event at the NCAA Championships.
