Junior forward Summer Parker's second half goal lifted the Liberty field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over William & Mary at Busch Field on Sunday afternoon.
Parker's goal, her first of the year, broke a 2-2 tie at 44:35 and came on the Lady Flames' third penalty corner of the match. Parker inserted the ball to Cassidy Bremner, who passed it to Serena Barr. Barr fired a ball towards the left post, and Parker tipped it in to give Liberty a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
With the win, Liberty has won its last two games and improves to 3-5 overall. The loss drops William & Mary to 3-5.
The Tribe found the back of the goal in the third minute, as Estelle Hughes sent a ball in from outside the circle. Midfielder Emma MacLeod redirected Hughes' hit past Liberty goalkeeper Allison Schaefer to give the host a 1-0 lead.
Junior forward Alynn Richardson gave the Lady Flames their first goal of the day at 10:03. Richardson took a pass from Serena Barr and hit a backhanded ball from in front of the goal cage that scooted past Tribe goalkeeper Morgan Connor to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Richardson's third of the season and 11th of her career.
Liberty scored again in the 20th minute, as forward Carrie Logie tallied her first career goal. Agueda Moroni drove inside the circle and sent a backhanded ball to the right post, and Logie tipped the ball in to give the Lady Flames a 2-1 advantage.
William & Mary evened the score at 2-2 on a Cammie Lloyd goal, her sixth of the season, at 25:29. The two teams went into intermission tied, 2-2, with neither team drawing a penalty corner in the first stanza.
Parker's goal proved to be the game-winner, but the Tribe tested Schaefer in the second half. The freshman made eight of her nine saves after halftime to record her third win of 2016. Schaefer now has 52 saves on the season and moved into third place all-time in program history in the category.
William & Mary drew its second short corner of the day with just over a minute to play, but Schaefer and the defense were up to the task. Liberty drew four of its own penalty corners after intermission, converting one.
The Lady Flames were outshot, 18-12, on the day. The Tribe's Lloyd fired a game-high nine shots, while Pippa Best paced Liberty with three shots.
Liberty plays its next match on Friday at 5 p.m. at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
The Monarchs are currently 5-3 and ranked No. 17 in the NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the NCAA Field Hockey RPI rankings.
