
Marshall Edges Liberty in OT, 3-2

The Marshall Thundering Herd scored 2:55 into overtime, edging the Liberty Flames, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
Liberty forward Tresor Mbuyu netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season and midfielder Kevin Mendoza scored his fourth goal of the year to send the game to overtime.
Liberty drops to 4-7-1 overall after its third overtime contest of the season. Marshall evens its record at 6-6.
Liberty struck for the match's first goal during the 27th minute. Mbuyu pushed the ball into the left side of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 Flames advantage.
Two minutes later, attacking pressure resulted in a corner kick for the Flames. Off the kick, midfielder Alan Arellano forced a save by Thundering Herd goalkeeper Trevor Clemens to keep his team within one. Mbuyu then worked himself into position for a shot attempt after Marshall was unable to clear, requiring Clemens to make another stop.
The host Herd took a 2-1 edge with back-to-back markers during a four-minute span early in the second half.
Marshall tied the contest off a corner kick during the 66th minute. Midfielder John Pappas put the kick into the center the box, where Trevor Starcher headed the ball in for his third goal of the year and a 1-1 tie.
The Thundering Herd took the lead during the 70th minute. Midfielder Daniel Jodah sent a crossing pass into the box. There, Myles Newhouse headed the ball into the top of the net for his first goal of the season, giving Marshall a 2-1 edge.
Liberty knotted the contest at 80:47. After a foul in the 18-yard box by the Thundering Herd, Mendoza scored the ensuing penalty kick, tying the game at 2-2.
Each goalkeeper was called upon to make a save in the closing minutes of regulation. Clemens turned away a shot by the Flames' Rigo Rojas during the 85th minute, while Liberty goalkeeper Jeremy Lee stopped a shot attempt by Marshall's Paul Whitener during the 86th.
The Thundering Herd scored the game-winner on its second shot of overtime. Newhouse headed in his second goal of the game at 92:55 for a 3-2 victory.
In the evenly played contest, shots were even at 11-11. Marshall held a 9-6 advantage over Liberty in corner kicks.
Lee made three saves for Liberty, while Clemens recorded six for Marshall.
The contest was Liberty's last non-conference game of the season. The Flames now return home for a Big South Conference match, Friday. Liberty will host the Campbell Camels at Osborne Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
