No. 18 Wake Forest Tops Liberty, 3-1

Wake Forest's Jule Grashoff scored on a penalty stroke during the 55th minute, helping No. 18 Wake Forest to a 3-1 victory over Liberty at the Liberty Field Hockey Field, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day.
Grashoff's goal, her second of the day and 13th of 2016, came after the sophomore drew a penalty stroke from in front of the Liberty goal. Grashoff lifted a ball into the left side of the net to put Wake Forest ahead, 2-1, at 54:45.
The Demon Deacons pushed the lead to 3-1 in the 63rd minute. Grashoff drove the right baseline and found Sarah Thornhill in front, and Thornhill put a shot into the right side of the goal cage for her fifth goal of the season.
With the loss, Liberty closes the regular season with a 7-9 record, while Wake Forest moves to 10-7.
Liberty struck for the match's first score on its third penalty corner. On the insert, Bethany Barr sent a pass to Agueda Moroni, who hesitated for a second with the ball to freeze the defense.
Moroni passed to Serena Barr, who buried a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Lady Flames a 1-0 lead at 27:22. The goal was the senior's seventh of the season and 28th of her career.
Wake Forest drew a penalty corner in the 30th minute and capitalized. Emily Conroe and Megan Anderson set up Grashoff, who lifted a shot into the top left corner to even the match at 1-1, a score that would hold into halftime.
Liberty nearly took a one-goal lead in the early stages of the second half. Freshman Kendra Jones applied heavy pressure and forced a turnover deep in the Wake Forest circle. She fired a shot that went just wide to the left, keeping the game even.
During the second half, the Lady Flames only managed three shots, with the final one coming with 1:34 to play off the stick of Moroni.
Liberty was outshot, 16-9, on the afternoon, while both teams drew four penalty corners.
Lady Flames' freshman goalkeeper Allison Schaefer made nine saves on the afternoon. Demon Deacons goalkeeper Cat O'Connor made two saves, earning the win.
Prior to the start of the contest, the Liberty field hockey program took time to honor its senior class comprised of Serena Barr, Bethany Barr and Carrie Logie. The players were joined by their families and recognized for their accomplishments during their four-year playing careers. As a member of the Liberty field hockey team, the three seniors have won 50 matches and made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
The Lady Flames will begin preparing for the 2016 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship at Temple this upcoming Friday and Sunday.
Liberty is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will face No. 3 seed Providence (13-5, 5-2 BIG EAST) in a semifinal matchup at 4 p.m. on Friday at Howarth Field at the Temple Sports Complex. No. 1 seed UConn (18-1, 7-0 BIG EAST) and No. 4 seed Temple (7-11, 3-4 BIG EAST) meet in the other semifinal matchup at 1 p.m.
The winner of both contests will square off in the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship Final at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6.
