No. 4 North Carolina scored four first-half goals and prevailed, 5-1, over Liberty at the Liberty Field Hockey Field on Sunday afternoon.
UNC (13-4) top goal scorer Lauren Moyer scored the game's first two goals, her 13th and 14th of the year, in the fifth and eighth minute to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead.
Moyer's first goal of the day came off a feed from Eef Andriessen from the right baseline. Andriessen sent the ball right in front of the net, and the senior one-timed it past Liberty (6-8) goalkeeper Allison Schaefer. Just under three minutes later, Moyer scored directly off a penalty corner, assisted by Julia Young and Gab Major.
The Tar Heels added to their lead at 27:57. After Moyer's initial shot was saved by Schaefer, Malin Evert collected a rebound and sent a shot into the left side of the goal to put the visitors up, 3-0.
In the 30th minute, UNC's Ashley Hoffman scored from the top of the circle on a penalty corner to extend the advantage to 4-0 heading into halftime.
Liberty scored its lone goal of the match in the second half on its fourth penalty corner of the day. Mallory Fortenbaugh sent a ball into Bethany Barr, who found her sister, Serena Barr.
Serena dribbled right and fed the ball across the circle to Agueda Moroni, who sent a shot off the left pad of Shannon Johnson and into the goal to trim the UNC lead to 4-1 at 58:20. The goal was Moroni's team-leading seventh of the season and her fifth in the last four matches.
The Tar Heels tallied the game's final goal at 62:24. Evert scored her second goal of the afternoon on a backhanded strike from the left wing, extending UNC's lead to 5-1.
North Carolina goalkeeper Alex Halpin (6-4) was credited with the win after playing the first 35 minutes. She did not have to record a save.
Liberty's Schaefer made 12 saves on the afternoon, tied for the most in a single game this season. She also recorded 12 saves at Duke on Aug. 28. The freshman now has 93 saves this season and moved past Mallory Cuccio (91 saves, 2014) for second place in single-season saves in program history.
UNC outshot Liberty, 27-7, while the two teams each drew four penalty corners. Moyer led the Tar Heels with eight shots (five on goal), while sophomore Pippa Best paced the Lady Flames with three shots.
The Lady Flames return to their home turf on Friday, as they play host to BIG EAST foe Temple (6-10, 3-3 BIG EAST) in their regular season conference finale. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.
