
Liberty Shuts Out Campbell, 7-0

Pitcher Victor Cole pitched eight shutout innings and center fielder Ashton Perritt had three hits, leading the Liberty Flames to a 7-0 victory over the Campbell Camels, in the middle game of a three-game Big South series, Saturday afternoon at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
Cole runs his record to 4-1 on the year. He scattered five hits over eight innings of work. He struck out two and walked a batter. The left-hander allowed only one leadoff batter to reach to open an inning and one Camel to advance to second base.
Caleb Evans pitched a scoreless ninth, as Campbell was shut out for the first time this season.
Perritt collected three hits and scored a run. It is the second game this season the senior center fielder has had three or more hits in a contest.
Third baseman Sammy Taormina drove in two runs with two hits, while shortstop Dalton Britt and right fielder Will Shepherd collected two hits each for the Flames.
Liberty moves to 8-3 in Big South play and 22-13 overall. The Flames snap a three-game losing streak with the victory. Campbell drops to 8-6 in conference and 25-11 overall.
Liberty scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 3-0 advantage. Perritt opened the inning with an infield single and advanced to third base on a single by Britt. Perritt then scored the first run of the game, as he and Britt executed a double steal for a 1-0 edge. Three batters later, Shepherd singled with two outs to plate Britt. Taormina followed with a RBI double for a 3-0 Flames lead.
Liberty added to its advantage in the third. Britt tripled off the right field wall to begin the inning and scored as first baseman Alex Close reached on a fielding error. Catcher Becker Sankey walked and Shepherd reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Taormina followed with a RBI single for 5-0 advantage.
After a double play plated Close, left fielder Josh Close beat out a bunt, scoring Sankey for what proved to be the final of 7-0.
Campbell pitcher Nick Thayer drops to 5-2 on the season. The right-hander was roughed up for six runs, four earned, in two-plus innings. He struck out one and walked one batter. Reliever Andrew Witczak gave up an unearned run on six hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked one batter.
Liberty collected 12 hits in the contest. Campbell managed five.
The two teams will meet again in the series finale, tomorrow afternoon at Liberty Baseball Stadium. The Military Appreciation Day contest will be televised live on ESPNU. It will be the first nationally televised game from Liberty Baseball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
