Liberty lacrosse achieved its first-ever Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) all-state selection, as freshman attacker Karis Walborn has been named second team all-state. The organization announced the annual teams Friday morning.
Walborn, who started each of the Lady Flames' 18 games during her rookie season, led the squad's scoring effort with 40 goals to set a new program scoring record. Her offensive output helped the team post a six-win improvement on its inaugural season, ending the 2011 campaign with a 7-11 mark.
The Nyack, N.Y., native also helped the program record its first postseason victory, a 16-13 win over Howard in the National Lacrosse Conference tournament. Walborn scorched the net for six goals in the contest, tying teammate Nina Dunay for Liberty's single-game scoring mark. She also led the team by picking up four ground balls in the game.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Walborn was named to the all-tournament team, accumulating seven goals and three assists in the event.
Eight of the state's teams were represented on the VaSID all-state teams, with Virginia's five selections leading the way. James Madison placed three on the listing, with each being named to the first-team. William & Mary's Grace Golden was named Player of the Year. Taylor Blazer of Richmond earned Freshman of the Year honors, while James Madison's Shelly Klaes-Bawcombe was voted Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
