
No. 2 Flames Edged by No. 4 Panthers

The No. 4 seed High Point Panthers edged No. 2 seed Liberty, 2-1, stranding Flames at second and third base to end the game, Thursday night in Game 8 of the Big South Baseball Championship at Winthrop Ballpark.
Liberty drops to 40-18 on the year and falls into an elimination game against No. 5 seed Winthrop tomorrow at 11 a.m. High Point moves to 31-27 and advances to play No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina tomorrow at 3 p.m.
After being locked in a pitcher's duel through the first five innings, the Panthers, the visitors on the scoreboard, broke through against Liberty starter Shawn Teufel in the sixth for the first run of the contest. Left fielder Matt Gantner and right fielder Max Fulginiti each singled and catcher Kyle Mahoney was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. The next batter, second baseman Murray White IV, proceeded to get hit by a pitch to force in a run to give High Point a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the ninth, the Panthers added an insurance run. White was hit by a pitch to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Drew Geissinger. After moving on a ground out, shortstop Mike Mercurio scored Geissinger with a two-out single to make it, 2-0.
Liberty rallied with one out in the bottom of the inning. Second baseman P.J. Jimenez dropped a single into left field to become the first baserunner for the Flames, since catcher Nathan Thompson's one out single in the sixth inning. Left fielder Kenneth Negron was hit by a pitch, and after a Panther pitching change pinch hitter Austin Taylor was hit to load the bases. A passed ball allowed Jimenez to score, cutting the lead to 2-1. However, reliever Kyle Wigmore was able to get the next two Liberty batters to close out the contest.
Despite a strong outing, Teufel drops to 10-4 on the season. The left-hander gave up one run on seven hits over 8 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters and walked two. Dane Beakler pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the Flames. He gave up one run on two hits.
High Point starter Jaime Shultz allowed three hits over 4 1/3 innings, before departing due to an injury in the fifth frame. Reliever Drew Dades followed and picked up the win, running his record to 2-0 on the year. He gave up one run on four hits, striking out three batters and walking one. Wigmore records his first save of the year, recording the final two outs of the contest, striking out one.
Liberty had five hits in the contests, while High Point had 10. Fulginiti went 4-for-4 for the Panthers, while Mercurio had two hits.
