The No. 2 seed Liberty Flames tied the school record with their 40th victory, after posting a 7-2 win over the No. 5 seed Winthrop Eagles, Wednesday afternoon in Game 4 of the 2010 Big South Baseball Championship at Winthrop Ballpark.
With the victory, Liberty advances to Game 8 of the Big South Baseball Championship and will meet the winner of today's contest between No. 3 seed Radford and No. 4 High Point, tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Flames move to 40-17 on the year, tying the 1983 Liberty team for the program's most wins in a season.
Winthrop drops to 26-29. The Eagles fall to an elimination game against No. 6 seed VMI, tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
Winthrop, the visiting team on the scoreboard, benefited from a Liberty error to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With one out and runners at first and second, Eagle third baseman Matt Pierpont grounded back to Flames pitcher Steven Evans, who threw wide of second base and into the outfield, allowing first baseman Patrick Gamblin to score the first run of the contest.
Liberty answered in the bottom of the inning. Catcher Nathan Thompson walked and moved to second base on an infield single by second baseman P.J. Jimenez. Left fielder Kenneth Negron followed by lining a double into the left field corner, plating both runners to give the Flames a 2-1 edge. First baseman Trey Wimmer brought home Negron with a ground out to second to make it, 3-1. The next batter, center fielder Curran Redal, singled home designated hitter Jeff Jefferson, who had singled, for a 4-1 lead.
Third baseman Tyler Bream extended the Liberty cushion in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and Redal on first base, Bream ripped a 2-2 pitch down the left field line and inside the foul pole for his ninth home run of the season, giving the Flames a 6-1 advantage.
Liberty added to its lead in the seventh. Bream singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. Thompson followed by lining an opposite field double over the head of the first baseman to score Bream for a 7-1 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the Eagles made it, 7-2. Center fielder Tyler McBride opened the inning with a double to center field and moved to third on single by the next batter, second baseman Tyler Cook. Two batters later, McBride came home on a wild pitch.
For the second time in six days, Evans kept the Winthrop bats in check to move his record to 9-2 on the season. The left-hander, who held the Eagles scoreless over eight innings last Thursday, gave up two runs on 11 hits in pitching his second complete game this season. He struck out nine batters and walked one.
Winthrop starter Robert Lake, who had beaten the Flames the past two times he had faced them, falls to 6-5. He allowed seven runs on 11 hits while pitching his second complete game of the year. He struck out three and walked two batters.
Bream and Thompson had two hits apiece to lead Liberty's 11-hit attack.
