The Lady Flames will take a break from Big South Conference play tomorrow, hosting UNC Greensboro for a non-conference doubleheader at Liberty Softball Field. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Liberty, which is a perfect 4-0 at home this season, is on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Winthrop in a three-game series last weekend, 3-1, 4-1 and 3-2. Sweeping the Spartans would mark the fifth time the Lady Flames have won their first six home games of the season. The last time
Liberty won its first four home games was in 2007, when the squad went 15-4 at Liberty Softball Field over the course of the year.
Liberty has not swept the Spartans since 2000, when the Lady Flames took two straight victories, 5-1 and 4-2, in Lynchburg, on March 28.
The Lady Flames were recognized for their solid performance last week, as J'nae Jefferson was named the Big South Player of the Week and Tiffani Smith nabbed her second consecutive Big South Pitcher of the Week honor. Jefferson ran her hitting streak to nine games and batted .500 in the Winthrop series, hitting a three-run walk-off homer to lift Liberty over the Eagles, 4-1, in Game 2. Smith picked up two wins over Winthrop and her first save of the season, posting a 0.58 ERA and only giving up one earned run in 12 innings pitched.
Liberty has been hot offensively, recording 24 hits in the Winthrop series, and at least eight hits in three of its last four contests.
Overall, the Lady Flames are led by Kelly Strickland, who is batting .369 with 26 RBIs and nine home runs, and leads the Big South with a .762 slugging percentage. Amber DePasquale, who has raised her batting average nearly 40 points since March 13, is batting .333 with 11 RBIs.
Smith leads the pitching staff with a 10-3 record and a 3.29 ERA, and leads the Big South with a .220 opposing batting average. She ranks second among conference players with 95 strikeouts.
Freshman pitcher Katie Warrington (6-4), only gave up one hit in six innings to pick up the win in the circle against Winthrop in Game 1 on April 2, her first Big South victory.
UNC Greensboro (14-9, 4-4 Southern Conference) has won four of its last nine games, all at home, and most recently took one of three games from Southern Conference opponent Elon.
The Spartans, hitting .219 as a team, are led by Alex Emeterio, who is batting .347 with 21 RBIs. Pitcher Cory Mattson leads the pitching staff with a 2.78 ERA and a 7-9 overall record, and has given up 77 hits and struck out 82 batters in 93 complete innings of work.
Liberty is 8-24 all-time against UNC Greensboro, after the Spartans swept last year's doubleheader, 2-1 and 3-1, in Greensboro, N.C.
