Liberty Edges Winthrop, 3-2
4/3/2010 12:00:00 AM | Softball
The Lady Flames put runners on first and second in the bottom of the first thanks to two consecutive Winthrop fielding errors, followed by Amber DePasquale singling with a liner to right to load the bases. But the runners stayed stranded as Kelly Strickland flied out and Danielle Howard struck out swinging.
Liberty made another threat in the bottom of the second. Meredith Baisden led off by busting a first-pitch single through the left side, and promptly stole second. Cassie Hendrix followed up with an infield single, moving Baisden to third. But Baisden's attempt to score was foiled by the Winthrop defense, as catcher Kelly Blea fielded J'nae Jefferson's short grounder and tagged Baisden before she could plate the run.
The Eagles had a big inning in the fourth, scoring two runs to take the lead. Pearl Coleshill led off by drawing a walk, and moved to second when Taylor Wright singled up the middle. Two outs later, both runners scored when Chelsey Schoenfeldt singled to left.
Winthrop didn't hold the lead for long, as Jefferson tied it up with one swing on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, her second bomb in two days, and fourth on the year.
Both teams put runners on base in the fifth and sixth frames, but neither squad could capitalize, and the game remained tied, 2-2, moving into the seventh inning.
Neither team could put a run on the board in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. Liberty held Winthrop in the top of the eighth, and began the bottom half of the inning with Danielle Howard on second base as per the international tie-break rule.
Kaylee West led off with a single through the right side, moving Howard to third. Then, with one out, Hendrix stepped up and smacked the game-winning hit, a single to left field, to bring in Howard and give the Lady Flames the 3-2 victory.
Hendrix was 3-for-4 on the day, while Jefferson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Eagles were led by Schoenfeldt, who was 1-for-2 at the plate and drove in both Winthrop runs.
Tiffani Smith (10-3) picked up the win in the circle, giving up two hits and striking out three batters in four complete innings. Starter Kat Johnson threw four complete innings, giving up three hits and recording three strikeouts.
Megan Evans suffered the loss, giving up three hits in three 1/3 innings, dropping to 7-5 on the year.
With the win, Liberty improves to 18-9 overall and 4-2 in the Big South, while Winthrop drops to 20-14 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Liberty continues the 2010 season this week, hosting UNC Greensboro in a doubleheader on April 7. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Eagles play on April 7 as well, traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a 4 p.m. doubleheader at North Carolina.
