
No.4 Liberty Falls to No. 5 Gardner-Webb

No. 5 seed Gardner-Webb knocked off No. 4 seed Liberty, 4-2, in the first round of the 2010 Big South Men's Tennis Championships Thursday morning at the RU Tennis Courts.
Gardner-Webb (12-13) advances to the semifinals and will take on top-seeded Radford Friday morning at 10 a.m. Liberty's season comes to an end with a 12-10 record
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match by winning two of the three doubles contests.
Their top duo of Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer defeated Siim Tuus and Tristan Stayt, 8-5. Just a short time later, Andrew Veeder and Jeremie Tardif clinched the team point for Gardner-Webb with an 8-6 win over Lemmi and Simpson on court two.
Liberty's lone doubles win came from the pairing of Juan Reyes and Louis Steyn at the No. 3 position, 8-6. The duo finished the season with a 12-1 record.
The Flames grabbed their first lead of the match at 2-1, with singles wins from Louis Steyn in the No. 5 contest and Tristan Stayt at No. 2. Steyn defeated Tardiff, 6-2, 6-2. Stayt downed Veeder, 6-1, 6-4.
However, Gardner-Webb bounced back with victories from Knutsson-Sunsdblad, Slesarev and Altmayer to secure the match, 4-2.
