Warrington Allows Just One Hit in Liberty Win

After the Eagles led off with three straight groundouts, J'nae Jefferson started the bottom of the first with a stand-up double that floated deep to center field. After Jenny Law popped out, Ashley Bensinger reached when she was hit by a pitch. But Winthrop hurler Cari Woodridge came up with two big strikeouts to send the scoreless game into the second frame.
Warrington didn't give up a hit until the top of the fourth inning, when Pearl Coleshill singled to left field. Coleshill then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Wright, and advanced to third when Chelsey Schoenfeldt grounded out. Kelly Blea then drew a walk to put runners on the corners with two outs, but Warrington struck out Veronica Berrie to get out of the jam.
The Lady Flames dropped two bombs to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. West put the first run on the board with a one-out homer over the right field fence, her third of the year. Meredith Baisden followed up with her first career home run with a shot over the scoreboard in center field, giving Liberty a two-run advantage.
Liberty added a run to its lead thanks to a Winthrop miscue in the bottom of the fifth. Jefferson led off with her second stand-up double of the game with a liner to right center, and scored when Bensinger reached on an error by third baseman Coleshill. The grounder bounced off of her glove and spun into a gap behind the shortstop, allowing Jefferson to cross the plate and give the Lady Flames a 3-0 lead.
With the win, the Lady Flames improve to 16-9 overall and 2-2 in Big South play, while the Eagles drop to 20-12 and 3-1 in the Big South.
Kaylee West paced Liberty at the plate, hitting 3-for-3, while Jefferson was 2-for-2 with two doubles. Winthrop was led by Coleshill, who recorded the Eagles' lone hit of the contest.
Warrington picked up the win in the circle, her first Big South victory, improving to 6-4 on the year. She gave up only one hit and fanned three batters in six complete innings, while last week's Big South Pitcher of the Week Tiffani Smith recorded her first save of the year, throwing one inning and striking out one Winthrop batter.
Cari Wooldridge (18-8) suffered the loss, giving up six hits and striking out eight batters in six innings of work.
The two squads will square off for Game 2 of today's doubleheader at Liberty Softball Field, later this afternoon.
