Smith Throws One-Hitter in 3-0 Win

Tiffani Smith went five complete innings without allowing a hit in her second consecutive start, as the Lady Flames defeated the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb, 3-0, in Game 1 of a Big South Conference doubleheader, Friday afternoon.
Smith struck out 10 batters for the third consecutive game and for the fifth time this season. The junior now has 143 strikeouts on the season, which ranks No. 10 on Liberty's single-season strikeout list.
The first three innings were silent, as neither team recorded a hit. Jenny Law changed that in the bottom of the fourth, ripping a one-out single to right and giving Liberty its first base runner of the contest. Ashley Bensinger was then clipped on the elbow by a pitch from Gardner-Webb starter Christine Murray, taking first and moving Law into scoring position. But Kelly Strickland struck out swinging and Amber DePasquale grounded out to second, moving the game into the fifth inning with no score.
Kaylee West led off the top of the fifth with a single to short left field, and advanced to second when Meredith Baisden laid down a successful sacrifice bunt. One out later, Cassie Hendrix extended her hitting streak to five games and hit her second home run of the season, a shot over the right field fence, to put the Lady Flames on the board. J'nae Jefferson followed up with another bomb, going to the opposite field to give the Lady Flames a 3-0 advantage.
Smith gave up her first hit in the top of the sixth, when Christa Fullwood reached on an infield single. But the Bulldogs couldn't bring her in, and Liberty kept the lead.
Gardner-Webb put runners on first and second in the top of the seventh due to a walk and a Liberty fielding error. But the Bulldogs couldn't capitalize, and the Lady Flames held on for the 3-0 shutout.
With the win, the Lady Flames improve to 24-11 overall and 7-3 in the Big South after winning their sixth league game in seven tries. Gardner-Webb drops to 15-26 overall and 5-7 in the Big South.
West went 2-for-3 at the plate for Liberty, while Hendrix was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Fullwood led the Bulldogs, recording her team's only hit of the game.
Smith improves to 14-3 on the year, while Murray drops to 8-13.
The two teams will square off for Game 2 of today's conference doubleheader later this afternoon.
