The two squads split a doubleheader on Friday, with the Lady Flames winning Game 1, 3-0, and the Bucs picking up the win in Game 2, 5-4.
Leadoff batter J'nae Jefferson singled on the first pitch of the game with a shot through the right side, and advanced to second when Jenny Law laid down a well-placed sacrifice bunt. Jefferson scored on the next play when Ashley Bensinger singled to left, giving the Lady Flames an early 1-0 advantage.
The Buccaneers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie it up. With one out, Megan Hall singled up the middle, and promptly stole second. Shayla Cullum then singled through the left side, moving Hall to third. Erin Kegley drove in Charleston Southern's first run with a double to right center, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Lady Flames put runners on in the top of the second, threatening to break the tie. With one out, Bridgett Woods singled on a liner to center field, followed by a popped bunt that dropped in for a single by Cassie Hendrix. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, putting runners on second and third with one out.
Jefferson hit a grounder to the second baseman Trea Steele, who tossed it home in time to tag out Woods for the second out. Law lined out to first on the next play to end Liberty's threat.
The Lady Flames capitalized in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. With one out, Meredith Baisden drew a walk and then stole second. One out later, Hendrix hit a liner that bounced off the leg of pitcher Sondra Vetter for a single, and Baisden moved to third.
Baisden then scored on a wild pitch, and Hendrix and Jefferson both crossed the plate when Law singled to left.
The Buccaneers loaded the bases on a walk, a defensive error and an intentional walk with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Tiffani Smith struck out cleanup hitter Shayla Cullum to get out of the jam, with the Lady Flames maintaining the 4-1 lead.
Liberty cushioned its lead in the top of the fifth, scoring another run. With two outs, Baisden singled through the left side to extend her hitting streak to 10 games. She then advanced to second on a passed ball, and after Woods drew a walk, Hendrix singled up the middle to score Baisden from second and put the Lady Flames up, 5-1.
The Buccaneers never recovered, and Liberty held on for the 5-1 victory.
With the win, the Lady Flames improve to 21-11 overall and 6-3 in Big South play, while Charleston Southern drops to 21-21 overall and 5-6 in the conference.
The Lady Flames were led by Hendrix, who was 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Law was 1-for-3 and drove in two runs.
Erin Kegley led the Bucs, batting 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Smith picked up her second win in two days in the circle, improving to 12-3 on the year. She gave up no hits and struck out nine batters in five and 1/3 innings of work.
Vetter (7-12) took the loss, giving up six hits and four earned runs in four complete innings.
The Bucs are back in action on April 14, hosting Big South opponent Coastal Carolina in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
Liberty will host James Madison on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
