Liberty redshirt freshman guard Devon Brown has garnered her third award in the last seven days. Today, she was named to the 2009-10 Richmond Times-Dispatch Division I All-State team, as selected by Vic Dorr, Jr.
Brown's (Waynesboro, Va.) inclusion on the squad makes it four consecutive years that a player wearing Liberty's No. 40 uniform has earned Times-Dispatch All-State honors. Megan Frazee made the squad in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09, earning State Player of the Year honors each of the last two seasons.
Monica Wright of Virginia is this season's Times-Dispatch State Player of the Year. Rounding out the All-State team is the trio of James Madison's Dawn Evans, Richmond's Brittani Shells and VCU's D'Andra Moss.
Brown's other recent accolades include the Big South Championship MVP award and a spot on the first team All-Big South roster. She garnered the MVP trophy after averaging 21.3 ppg and making the game-winning bank shot with 4.2 seconds remaining in Sunday's championship game against top-seeded Gardner-Webb. Brown was also the first freshman included on the first team All-Big South squad since the 1996-97 season.
A two-time Big South Player of the Week, Brown is the conference's leading scorer at 16.9 ppg. She is tied with teammate Avery Warley (R-So., F, Washington, D.C.) for second in the Big South, with 8.4 rebounds per contest.
Brown is one of only two Lady Flames (also Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Elena Kisseleva) ever to score more than 500 points as a freshman. She also owns the Liberty freshman rebounding record, with 268 boards this season.
Brown and the Lady Flames earned the No. 13 seed in the Kansas City Region of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship, after capturing their 13th Big South title in the last 14 seasons. Liberty (27-5) will face No. 4 seed Kentucky (25-7) Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. The first-round contest will be televised live on ESPN2.
