The Lady Flames head back to Lynchburg after playing 13 games in 13 days on their 2010 spring break trip, going 9-4 during the trek and moving to 12-6 on the season.
Jenny Law recorded the game's first hit early, belting a stand-up double to right center with one out in the top of the first. An out later, Kelly Strickland singled up the middle and advanced to second on a throwing error by center fielder Katy Jett, which allowed Law to score and give Liberty a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Flames didn't stop there, as Amber DePasquale singled through the left side, moving Strickland to third. Keely McMillon, playing in her first game of the day, followed up with an RBI single up the middle, pushing the score to 2-0.
East Tennessee State cut Liberty's lead in half in the bottom of the first when Lucy Schneider hit a solo homer to left field, bringing the Buccaneers to within one run, 2-1.
Ashley Bensinger led off the third with a double that bounced off the left field wall, but couldn't advance, as the East Tennessee State defense made three consecutive outs.
Schneider kept the pressure on Liberty starting pitcher Tiffani Smith, and single-handedly tied up the score with her second solo homer of the day, a one-out shot to center field, to even it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third.
Strickland drove in another run in the top of the fifth with a single that dropped into short right field, allowing Jefferson, who walked, to cross the plate. DePasquale then hit a timely double to left, bringing in Bensinger and giving Liberty a 4-2 advantage.
At that point, East Tennessee State brought in relief pitcher Shelby Morris with runners on second and third and only one out. Then, McMillon drove in her second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right, bringing in Strickland to make the score 5-2.
The offensive surge continued for the Lady Flames, as Meredith Baisden doubled to right to bring in Liberty's sixth run. The hit, which nearly cleared the wall, marked Baisden's second hit of the year and her first career double.
Despite East Tennessee State putting runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Smith came up with a timely strikeout, fanning pinch hitter Mikayla Treadway to send the game into the final inning.
The Bucs tried to get into a groove late in the contest with a seventh-inning rally, as Cheniece Cason singled up the middle with one out. Schneider then reached on a blooper single in short left, advancing Cason to second. Katy Jett grounded out to shortstop for the second out, bringing up Trisha Massenzo. Massenzo, who homered in the first game, doubled deep to center field to bring in two runs and make the score 6-4.
Marlina Delisa was up next, and hit a deep shot to right field, where Law made a diving catch to end the game.
The Lady Flames were led by Strickland, who was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and McMillon, who batted 1-for-3 and drove in two runs.
With her two homers, Schneider led East Tennessee State, batting 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
With the win, the Lady Flames improve to 12-6 on the year, while the Bucs drop to 9-14.
Smith picked up her sixth win of the season, improving to 6-3. She gave up eight hits and struck out eight batters in the complete-game victory.
Hardy (1-8), gave up eight hits and tallied four strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Liberty is back in action on Thursday, when the Lady Flames open Big South Conference play with a doubleheader at preseason favorite Radford. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 3 p.m.
