
Liberty Shines From the Line in 55-40 Victory

On a night when Liberty struggled shooting from the field, free throw shooting and defense keyed a road victory at Presbyterian College. The Lady Flames shot 84.6 percent (22-of-26) from the line and came up with 16 steals in a 55-40 triumph, Monday evening at the Templeton Center.
Liberty improves to 22-5 overall and 12-2 in the Big South, after winning its fifth straight game overall and its seventh consecutive road contest. The Lady Flames are now 5-0 all-time versus Presbyterian College.
The Blue Hose are now 5-23 overall and 3-11 in Big South play. Presbyterian College has now dropped six straight contests.
Devon Brown got the Lady Flames off to a fast start, scoring the game's first five points in the opening 48 seconds of play on a three-point play and a fast break layup.
The Blue Hose cut the deficit to 5-4 when Devin Fothergill banked in a 17-foot jumper at 17:47.
Avery Warley then began to assert herself under the basket for Liberty, scoring nine consecutive Lady Flames points. The redshirt sophomore tallied the first seven markers of the blue-clad visitors' extended 16-0 run. Dymond Morgan's layup off of a steal increased Liberty's lead to 25-7 at the 9:22 mark, and the Lady Flames kept Presbyterian College off the scoreboard for more than seven minutes during the surge.
The Blue Hose bounced back with a 5-0 burst, trimming their deficit to 25-12 when Mariah Pietrowski converted an old-fashioned three-point play, 8:25 before intermission.
Liberty's defense limited Presbyterian College to one made field goal for the remainder of the stanza, building a 19-point advantage before heading to the locker room on top, 33-16.
The Blue Hose actually shot slightly better from the field than Liberty in the first half, hitting 37.5 percent (6-of-16) of its attempts. Meanwhile, the Lady Flames checked in at 37.0 percent (10-of-27).
However, Liberty was perfect from the foul line. Two days after missing 18 free throws at UNC Asheville, the Lady Flames drained all 13 of their charity tosses during the opening 20 minutes at the Templeton Center.
Liberty also took advantage of its pronounced height advantage, outrebounding its host, 21-8, and scoring 20 points in the paint to two for the Blue Hose. Additionally, an aggressive Lady Flames defense came up with nine opening-half steals and converted the thefts into 10 points.
Brown continued her production after a hot start, leading all players with 13 first-half points. Warley added nine points and a half-high seven rebounds for the Lady Flames. Defensively, Morgan accounted for a team-best three steals in a productive five minutes of work.
Pietrowski's five points paced the Blue Hose in the first half, while Lea Smith added four tallies after being honored as Presbyterian College's lone senior, prior to tipoff.
The Lady Flames did not make their first field goal of the second period until an up-and-under move by Jelena Antic, 9:36 into the half. However, Liberty hit seven of its nine foul shots in the meantime and the Blue Hose got no closer than 14 during the Lady Flames' field goal drought. The conversion by Antic made the score 42-22, Liberty.
Presbyterian College chipped away at the Lady Flames' edge, pulling to within 45-30 on Chelsea Parker's putback hoop with 5:42 remaining.
Liberty then ended the Blue Hose chances at a comeback with a 7-1 spurt. Amber Mays' driving layup at 2:59 bolstered the Lady Flames' lead to 52-31.
Presbyterian College notched seven of the game's last eight points, but ran out of time and Liberty finished off a 55-40 win.
The Blue Hose shot a better percentage from the floor for the game than Liberty, connecting at a 42.4 percent (14-of-33) rate. The Lady Flames ended at 38.1 percent (16-of-42). However, Liberty owned considerable advantages in points in the paint (30-8) and second-chance points (15-4).
The Lady Flames also helped their nation-leading rebounding margin by claiming a 36-17 advantage on the glass.
Warley finished with her third consecutive double-double for the Lady Flames, ending with 13 points and a game-high 11 boards. She did not miss a single shot attempt on the night, going three-for-three from the field and seven-for-seven from the free throw line. Warley has now hit 12 straight charity tosses, dating back to the second half of Saturday's game at UNC Asheville.
Brown scored a game-high 15 points, while adding five caroms and three steals. Three other Lady Flames—Antic, Mays and Morgan—posted a trio of steals as well.
Amanda Mills scored six of her team-high eight points in the final eight minutes for Presbyterian College. Shonda Burnside came off the bench for seven points and a team-best four rebounds.
Liberty will return home for its final two games of the regular season, beginning with a Friday evening contest against Commonwealth foe Radford. The Lady Flames will attempt to complete a season sweep of the Highlanders at 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, Presbyterian College will take to the road to close out its year. The Blue Hose will play at Charleston Southern Friday at 7 p.m.
