
High Point Moves Past Flames, 81-53

Looking to separate itself in the three-way battle for third place in the conference, the Liberty men's basketball team stepped into the Millis Athletic and Convocation Center on Thursday, taking on High Point. Playing without leading scorer Kyle Ohman, the Flames found themselves unable to break away, as the Panthers went on to take the contest, 81-53.
The Panthers unveiled a hot hand early, as Tehran Cox nailed a three-pointer in the opening 15 ticks of the contest, giving the Panthers an early 3-0 advantage. Following a basket by Antwan Burrus to cut it to one, High Point's Nick Barbour netted two treys and a layup, helping the Panthers pull out to an 11-2 lead at 16:15. Earnest Bridges added a long jumper at 15:17, capping off a 10-0 run to make it 13-2, High Point.
The Flames ended the Panthers' scoring streak at 13:52, when Even Gordon hit a shot at the charity stripe, making it 13-3. Nearly a minute and a half later, David Minaya sunk a three-pointer to trim the deficit to seven, 13-6.
High Point responded to Liberty's quartet of tallies with a four-point play, as Barbour drained a three-point shot while being fouled and followed up with a conversion at the line, helping the Panthers maintain a double-digit margin, 17-6, at 12:13.
Liberty cut the deficit back to seven, as Minaya netted four-straight points for the Flames, trimming it to 17-10 at 10:45.
The Panthers regained an 11-point advantage at 9:26, when Corey Law threw down a jam to make it 21-10.
The Flames rallied over the next 3:19, outscoring the Panthers, 9-2, to pull within 23-19 at 6:07, thanks to baskets from Perez, Gordon and Johnny Stephene.
Liberty failed to chip away the Panther lead any further, as High Point proceeded to go on a 13-2 in the closing minutes of the half, giving the host a 36-21 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.
Barbour finished the half with 20 points off seven-of-nine shooting from the field and a perfect five-of-five from downtown. Minaya was the leading scorer for the Flames before intermission, chipping in seven tallies.
The Panthers shot 35.1 percent (13-of-37 shooting) from the field in the opening half, while holding Liberty to 26.1 percent (6-of-23). Three-pointers were the difference in the first half, with the Panthers outscoring the Flames behind the arc, 18-3.
High Point struck first in the second period, when Law scored on a put-back jam, stretching the home team's lead to 17, 38-21 at 18:50.
Liberty then answered with five-straight points via a Burrus jumper and a Jeremy Anderson trey, cutting the High Point advantage to 12 at 18:10, 38-26.
Following a David Singleton jumper at 17:43, Anderson netted another three-pointer 10 seconds later making it 40-29.
The Panthers responded to Anderson's dual treys by going on a 10-2 run to expand their lead to 19 over the next 3:08, 50-31.
Jesse Sanders trimmed the deficit to 17 at 13:17 with two foul shots, making it 50-33.
The Flames did not get any closer down the stretch, as High Point increased the margin to 20 points, 57-37, with 11:00 remaining on the clock, when Cox hit two shots at the foul line.
The Panthers continued to pour on the points over the next 6:44, outscoring the Flames 16-10, while holding the visitors to just two field goals during the stretch, claiming a 73-47 lead with 4:16 left in the contest.
High Point did not let up in the closing minutes, ultimately earning the 81-53 decision. The Panthers improve to 10-8 on the season and 5-3 in conference play, while the Flames fall to 9-11 overall and 4-4 in the Big South.
Barbour finished with 24 points in the contest, followed by Law who chipped in 12 for the Panthers. Singleton posted a near double-double with 10 tallies and nine rebounds. Anderson led the way for the Flames in scoring, netting 11 points by hitting three treys and sinking two free throws at the charity stripe.
High Point shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the field in the game, while holding the Flames to 33.3 percent (15-of-45).
Liberty remains on the road Saturday, travelling to Radford, Va., to face Radford inside the Dedmon Center. Tipoff with the Highlanders is slated for 6 p.m.
