Henderson Takes Fifth in USATF Discus

Clendon Henderson, a 2008 Liberty graduate and current assistant coach for the Flames, spun his way to an impressive fifth-place finish in the men's discus, Friday night at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Henderson's lofty placing highlighted the Flames' performances at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Henderson wasted no time in putting a solid mark on the board. Competing in the first of two flights, the Texas native hurled the discus a season-long 196-7 on his opening attempt. The distance held up as Henderson's best of the evening, enabling him to place fifth in a field of 24 of the nation's top collegiate and post-collegiate throwers. It was a marked improvement from Henderson's 22nd-place showing at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, which were contested at the same facility.
The only three throwers to exceed 200 feet on Friday will comprise the U.S. men's discus squad at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany later this summer. Casey Malone led the way at 213-3, followed by Jarred Rome's 208-3 toss and Ian Waltz's 203-1 effort. Lance Brooks edged Henderson for fourth place by two inches.
Henderson's pupil, Ryan Smith (Fr., Winder, Ga.), competed in the junior men's shot put earlier on Friday. Each of Smith's three throws with the six-kilogram implement was longer than the previous attempt. His final put stretched the tape to 57-6.5, placing Smith 10th in the 20-member field.
Arizona State's Jordan Clarke won the competition with a meet-record distance of 67-1.5, claiming a berth in the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships in Trinidad & Tobago.
Danielle McNaney, a 2005 Liberty graduate, will begin the heptathlon Saturday at 2 p.m. Eastern, with the 100-meter hurdles.
