McNaney Sits 13th After Day One

Danielle McNaney, a 2005 Liberty graduate, is in 13th place after Saturday's opening-day heptathlon events at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. McNaney tied her career-best high jump clearance, helping her get off to a strong start at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
McNaney posted 3,347 points through the first four events, leaving her only seven tallies shy of her highest-ever first-day score. Hyleas Fountain, the reigning Olympic silver medalist, owns a sizable lead after racking up 4,038 points on Saturday. Fellow 2008 Olympian Diana Pickler is currently second with 3,768.
McNaney's day opened with a season-best 14.01 clocking in the 100-meter hurdles. She then proceeded to the high jump pit, where the Kansas native missed only one attempt before the bar was raised to 5-7.75. McNaney was successful on her third try at that height, equaling her personal best, which was set at the 2006 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Only four of the 20 heptathletes outjumped McNaney on Saturday.
McNaney's third event, the shot put, saw her second throw reach 39-1. The distance was only three inches shy of her personal best, established during the 2005 season. To round out the first day, McNaney sprinted a wind-aided time of 25.56 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
The heptathlon long jump, the first of three events on McNaney's Sunday schedule, is slated to begin at 2 p.m. Eastern. Liberty freshman Ryan Bell (New Wilmington, Pa.) will then compete in the junior men's javelin at 6:10 p.m. NBC will broadcast the meet's final day of competition live from 4-6 p.m. Eastern.
