Liberty redshirt freshman Anthony Bryant and freshman John Talbert both put themselves in good position to qualify for the national meet with their performances on Saturday at the NCAA Division I East Regional Track & Field Championships. Bryant took sixth place in the men's triple jump, while Talbert finished sixth in the men's discus, highlighting the Flames' efforts during the second day of action at Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C.
Bryant (Charlottesville, Va.) reached 51-3.75 on his second triple jump attempt, representing his second-longest effort this season. He stood in fifth place throughout much of the competition, before hometown favorite David McFadgen of North Carolina A&T passed him during the final round of jumps. Bryant, ranked No. 20 nationally entering this weekend, will now hope for at-large selection to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Teammate Clarence Powell (So., Marianna, Fla.) triple jumped 49-5, tying Cornell's Daune Teixeira for 20th place.
Meanwhile, Talbert (Newton, Kan.) saved his best discus throw for last, stretching the tape to 173-11. However, the attempt left Talbert just two feet shy of collecting the fifth and final NCAA automatic qualifying berth. Like Bryant, Talbert will join the list of potential at-large selections for the national meet, with the official field of competitors being announced Tuesday. Talbert entered the weekend listed No. 10 on the national performance list.
The pair of sixth-place finishes pushed Liberty's final team score to 11 points on the weekend. The Flames tied North Carolina for 22nd place in the final men's team standings. Florida claimed the regional title with 84 points, outdistancing South Carolina's 62 markers.
Liberty's qualifiers will now prepare for the 2009 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The four-day meet will begin June 10 at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark. Sam Chelanga (R-So., Nairobi, Kenya) and Matt Parker (Sr., Rome, N.Y.) have locked down spots at the national meet, while Bryant, Talbert and decathlete Daniel Newell (R-Sr., Roanoke, Va.) all have a solid chance of joining them in Arkansas.
