With the win, Liberty runs its winning streak to seven-straight, remaining unbeaten on its current homestand. The Flames move to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the Big South, while Charleston Southern drops to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
After tying the contest, 3-3, with two runs in the seventh inning, Liberty plated two in the eighth frame to take a 5-3 edge. Cody Brown (Sr., Cumming, Ga.), who took over at first base for the Flames in the top of the seventh, reached on a throwing error by Bucs third baseman Kory Moriah to open the frame. Brown moved to second base, when the errant throw got by Charleston Southern first baseman Nick Chinners. After a wild pitch allowed pinch runner James Hipp (Jr., OF, Uvalde, Texas) to advance to third base, Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) ripped a liner into right field, which got past diving right fielder Brantley Meier for a triple, giving Liberty its first lead of the game, 4-3. Two batters later, P.J. Jimenez (Jr., Yucaipa, Calif.) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Bream for a 5-3 edge.
In the top of the ninth inning, Charleston Southern rallied for a run, but reliever Steven Evans (So., LHP, Amherst, Va.) was able to close out the Buccaneers for the 5-4 win. Shortstop Mark Perry singled home Meier, who had reached on a fielding error by Flames' first baseman Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.), trimming Liberty's lead to one run, 5-4, with two outs. Evans induced Charleston Southern's Scott Radbaugh into a fielder's choice, securing the victory for the Flames.
The visiting Buccaneers jumped on the scoreboard in their opening at bat. Left fielder Radabaugh led off the contest with a double down the left field line. Center fielder Tom Burkett followed with his third home run of the year, into the left field bullpen at Worthington Stadium, staking Charleston Southern to a 2-0 lead.
Liberty right fielder Casey Brown (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) trimmed the Flames' deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, the right fielder blasted his second home run of the season over the left field wall, plating Liberty's first run of the contest.
The Buccaneers extended their advantage in the top of the sixth inning, stringing together three two-out singles to score a run. Catcher Jake Cox began the trio of singles, with a base hit through the left side of the infield. After Perry singled to keep the frame alive, Radabaugh singled, scoring Cox for a 3-1 Charleston Southern advantage.
Liberty rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to knot the contest at 3-3. Tyler Bream walked to open the frame and moved to second base two batters later, via Jimenez' s base on balls. Next batter, shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.), was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) followed with a single through the right side of the infield to score Bream, cutting the Bucs edge to 3-2. The Flames then tied the game on a wild pitch, allowing Jimenez to score.
Flame starter Mark Swanson (Jr., RHP, Buford, Ga.) gave up three runs on 10 hits over six innings, and did not factor in the decision. The right-hander struck out six hitters and did not walk a batter. Right-hander Carter Browning (Jr., Ada, Okla.) followed with a scoreless frame of the relief. Evans finished the contest for Liberty, picking up the win to run his record to 2-0 on the year. The left-hander allowed an unearned run on two hits, striking out two and walking two.
Buccaneer starter Anthony Markham held the Flames in check through the first five innings of the contest, giving up one run on six hits, striking out five hitters and walking two. Reliever Patrick Dolan followed, yielding two runs on one hit, striking out two and walking three. Tyler Thornburgh takes the loss, his first of the year to fall to 3-1. The right-hander gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Casey Brown and Doug Bream, who started the game as the designated hitter, each had two hits for Liberty. Perry and Radabaugh had three hits apiece to pace Charleston Southern.
The Flames and Buccaneers meet tomorrow for the middle game of the Big South Conference series. First pitch at Worthington Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
