Liberty falls to 10-4 on the year, 1-1 in the Big South Conference, while Charleston Southern evens its record at 8-8 on the season, and moves to 3-2 in conference play. Liberty, which won the first seven games of its longest homestand of the season, finishes its home stretch at 7-1.
The visiting the Buccaneers got on the scoreboard in the opening inning. Left fielder Scotty Radabaugh walked to lead off the contest and moved to third base two batters later on a single to right field by second baseman Kory Morian. Radabaugh then scored the first run of the contest on a ground out by right fielder Tyler Thornburg, staking the visitors to a 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth inning, Charleston Southern added to its lead. Thornburg opened the frame with a single up the middle. Two batters later, the Bucs right fielder moved to second, when third baseman Pat Dolan walked. First baseman Nick Chinners followed by lining a single to left field to plate Thornburg for a 2-0 Charleston Southern edge. Dolan later scored, when shortstop Mark Perry looped a single over the left side of the Liberty infield and into left field for a 3-0 Buccaneers lead.
In the bottom of the frame, the Flames got on the scoreboard with their first run of the contest. With two outs, Third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) split the Buccaneers left and center fielders with liner into the left-center field gap for a double. The Liberty third baseman then scored, as Charleston Southern second baseman Morian mishandled a grounder by Flames' second baseman P.J. Jimenez (Jr., Yacaipa, Calif.).
The Buccaneers countered with a run in the top of the fifth, to stretch their advantage to 4-1. Center fielder Tom Burkett walked to open the inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Morian. After Burkett stole third base, designated hitter Derek Smith singled through the left side to plate the runner.
Liberty trimmed the Charleston Southern lead to one in the bottom of the sixth frame. Pinch hitter Jeff Jefferson (So., Danville, Pa.) lined a single through the right side of the infield to open the inning and moved to second, when Tyler Bream walked. After Jefferson advanced to third base on a double play, shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) beat out a bunt single to put Flame runners on the corner. Center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) lined a double down the right field line, chasing home both runners, and cutting the Bucs advantage to 4-3.
Charleston Southern upped their edge to 6-3 with single runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Burkett connected for a one-out solo home run, his fourth of the season, over the left field wall. In the eighth inning, a RBI double by pinch hitter Jake Cox plated the sixth Buccaneer run of the contest.
Charleston Southern added an insurance run in the ninth inning on single by Morian and a run-scoring double by designated hitter Derek Smith.
The Flames rallied for a run in the bottom of the frame, but Thornburg came on to seal the Bucs victory. Redal walked leading off the inning. Designated hitter Cody Brown (Sr., Cumming, Ga.) followed with a double into the right-center field gap for the final margin of 7-4. After Thornburg walked the first hitter he faced, first baseman Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.), the Charleston Southern right hander retired the next three Liberty hitters to record his first save of the year.
Flames starter Shawn Teufel (Jr., Tequesta, Fla.) takes the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season. The left-hander, the first of three Liberty pitchers, allowed three runs on five hits, striking out five hitters and walking two.
Buccaneer reliever Keith Hustedt records the win, moving to 1-0 on the year. The second of four Charleston Southern pitchers in the game, the right-hander gave up two runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings of work. He struck out two and walked one batter. Thornburg recorded all three outs in the ninth to earn the save. He struck out two and walked one.
Tyler Bream went 3-for-3 in the contest for the Flames. First baseman Nick Chinners paced the Buccaneers with three hits.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to league restrictions.
Liberty travels to Harrisonburg, Va., Tuesday, for a contest with the Dukes of James Madison. The meeting will be the second of three games between the squads this season. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
