
Flames Post First Win of Season

The Liberty Flames men's tennis team notched its first victory of the year, Saturday night inside the Sport Racket, by sweeping Bluefield, 7-0.
The Flames, who are now 1-1 on the year, opened the match with victories in each of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 advantage. Liberty's Giancarlo Lemmi and Clay Cypert defeated Bluefield's Andy Sarver and Marcin Majchreax in No. 1 doubles, 8-3, to begin the doubles sweep. The Flames' duo of Chad Simpson and Juan Reyes took the No. 2 contest, 8-1, over Susan Zivcovik and Derick Sizemore, while Gregorio Machado and Louis Steyn won in No. 3 doubles over Howard Coston and Justin Wood, 8-0.
In singles, head coach Chris Johnson's team continued its success, taking all six singles contests for a 7-0 match victory. All six Liberty players won their matches in straight sets. Otavio Costa in the No. 4 match, Machado in the No. 5 match and Juan Reyes in the No. 6 match did not drop a game in winning their singles contests. Cypert took the No. 1 singles contest for the Flames, while teammate Steyn won at No. 2 singles.
The Liberty men's tennis team next hosts Lynchburg at the Sport Racket on Feb. 7. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
