Inclement weather failed to make an appearance Friday, as the Liberty men's tennis team remained in Lynchburg to square off against fellow Hill City squad, Lynchburg College. Originally scheduled for Feb. 27, the two neighboring teams met on the LC courts with Liberty sweeping the Hornets, 7-0.
The tandem of Sebastian Pena and Rafael Riso set the tone for the Flames in doubles, defeating Kristian Richardson and Daniel Civis, 8-3. Chad Simpson and Leandro Schjumann then secured the doubles point, with an 8-0 win in No. 2 doubles. Freshman Justin Coache made his Liberty tennis debut, teaming with Juan Reyes to take No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
The Flames continued their success in singles action, winning all six contests for the second time in a match this season. Simpson and Franco Valdez did not give up a game in No. 1 and No. 5 singles respectively, each defeating his opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Schujmann saw action in Liberty's No. 2 singles spot, beating Lynchburg's Daniel Civis, 6-2, 6-0. Riso took No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, followed by Juan Reyes, who gave up only two games in the No. 4 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Coache rounded out the afternoon, beating Kyler Paluga in No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
The Flames return to conference play this Tuesday for the first time since Feb. 23, taking on the Panthers of High Point. Match time is slated for 1:30 p.m.
