Veliz Competes in Quito Challenger

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty Freshman signing, Angel Veliz, competed in the ATP Challenger Quito this week. Veliz participated in singles on Monday, while slated to compete in the doubles bracket of the event beginning on Wednesday.
Veliz continues to stay busy since signing with the Flames in April. He has competed in three M15 Quito events, compiling a 5-2 record in singles. Veliz reached the semifinals in the M15 Quito (April 20-26), highlighted by a Round of 16, 6-2, 6-2 triumph over No. 687, Nicolas Villalon.
The Manta, Ecuador native began the event in singles. He gained a first set, 6-3 win over Daniel Antonio Núñez. Veliz fought throughout but was unable to hold onto the lead, ultimately falling in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. In the match, Veliz notched eight aces with a .530 first serve percentage.
In doubles, along with partner Felipe Rivadeneira, the pair will take on the bracket's No. 4 seed in the Brazilian duo of Luis Britto and Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.
