Both teams entered the contest ranked in their respective region's rankings. Liberty entered the week as the South Atlantic Region's No. 5-ranked team, while North Carolina ranked No. 7 in the latest South Region Poll.
With the setback, the Flames drop to 6-2-1 on the year. The Tar Heels improve to 3-2-4.
North Carolina jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the contest's 11th minute. Forward Brian Shriver took a pass from midfielder Scott Campbell and moved around a defender, firing a low shot from 10 yards out for his first goal of the year.
The Tar Heels extended their advantage in the 20th minute. After Liberty keeper Paul Gilbert (Rockvale, Tenn.) blocked a head-in attempt on a corner kick, North Carolina defender David Rodriguez cleaned up the loose ball for his first goal of the season and a 2-0 Tar Heel lead.
The teams then traded shot opportunities, with an attempt by Liberty midfielder Juan Guzman (So., Charlotte, N.C.) sailing high over the net.
North Carolina netted back-to-back markers just a little over a minute apart, a bit later in the opening half. Tar Heel Bill Dworsky flicked a header off a corner kick past Gilbert at 32:52 for a 3-0 lead, and at 34:06, Shriver found a trailing Zach Lloyd for a 4-0 advantage at intermission.
In the second half, the homestanding Tar Heels added two more tallies, in the 51st and 54th minute.
The Flames' Adrian Bumbut (Sr., F, Zalau, Romania) spoiled the shutout in the 64th minute. The forward received a pass from defender Mike Gelatt (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) and pumped a shot into the left side of the North Carolina net for his team-high sixth goal of the season.
The Tar Heels added a late goal, for the final 7-1 margin.
For the game, North Carolina outshot Liberty, 18-7. It is only the second time this season, the Flames have allowed an opponent double-digit shot attempts in a contest. The Tar Heels also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Gilbert made four saves in the Flames net, while North Carolina keeper Brooks Haggerty recorded one save in 57 minutes of action and substitute Chris Litchford did not make a stop in his 33 minutes.
Liberty returns home on Saturday to host the Thundering Herd of Marshall. Game time at Liberty Soccer Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
