
Highlanders Down Flames, 3-1

After an evenly played first half, the Radford Highlanders scored three second-half goals to defeat the Liberty Flames, 3-1, Tuesday evening in a Big South Conference contest at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.
With its first setback of the season, Liberty moves to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big South Conference, while Radford improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The match was the first in conference play for both teams. The setback snapped a six-game win streak by the Flames over the Highlanders, dating back to 2000.
Both teams had chances in the first half, but neither side could convert their chances despite eight shots by Radford and seven from the Flames. The game went to intermission in a scoreless tie.
Radford senior Ramon "Kike" Negron, who came up empty on an open look at the net in the first half, redeemed himself after shortly after halftime. Negron corralled a loose ball in front of the Liberty goal and flicked it past Flames' keeper Kevin Mahan (Sr., Waterford, Minn.) to give Radford a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute of play.
Senior Jonathan Smith gave Radford a 2-0 edge; 25 minutes later, when he took a touch pass from Negron and scored from 18 yards out.
Highlander junior Davorin Husadzinovic added an insurance goal in the 86th minute, recording the marker on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box.
Husadzinovic's goal became paramount just two minutes later when junior Toby Lewis (Morrison, Colo.) fired a hard shot from the right side of the box and scored off a pass from senior forward Darryl Roberts (Trincity, Trinidad) at 88:31. The marker, Lewis' first of the season, made the final outcome, 3-1.
Radford sophomore keeper Zach Roszel and Mahan each made two saves on the evening.
