Benham was selected in the 1997 MLB Draft (41st round), but he returned to Liberty for his final season where he was taken in the 12th round by the Boston Red Sox. He played four seasons of minor league baseball in the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinal organization before starting a real estate career with his brother in the Charlotte, N.C. area.
