Former Liberty shortstop Matt Williams joined the Liberty Baseball Staff in January of 2024.
Williams will assist in all aspects of the Liberty baseball program, focusing on player development, hitting and team defense.
The former Flame joins Jackson’s staff after spending six years as an area scout for the Minnesota Twins. Williams’ region included the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. Catcher Ryan Jeffers, who played at UNCW, and pitcher Josh Winder, who played at VMI, are two of Williams’ signees to make it to the majors.
The Franklin, Tenn., native was a standout for the Flames from 2009-11. Liberty’s starting shortstop each of his three seasons on the Mountain, Williams hit .327 with 86 RBI and 142 runs scored in 166 games. He is fourth all-time in program history with 51 career doubles.
Williams was named to the Big South All-Conference second team in 2010 and 2011. He also is among the Liberty’s top 10 season leaders with 85 hits and 22 doubles in 2010.
The infielder was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 15th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. Williams played seven years in the minors with the Cardinals, Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies organizations from 2011-2017, appearing in over 656 games. He played three seasons at the Triple-A level before retiring after the 2017 season. During his minor league career, Williams mainly saw action at shortstop, but played every position on the diamond except catcher, posting a .258 batting average and a .951 fielding percentage.
Williams and his wife DeLesia have a daughter Paisyn (4) and a son Tate (2).
