Following an All-American and record-breaking career at Liberty, Kyle Mitchell is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Flames. Mitchell, who began coaching at Liberty during the 2022-23 season, primarily works with the throwers.
Mitchell earned second team All-America honors by placing 14th in the shot put at the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Earlier that season, he heaved the shot a personal-best 64-9.75 to set the Liberty and ASUN Championship records for the event.
Other 2021 highlights for Mitchell included a shot put victory at the Texas Relays and a fourth-place finish at the Jamaica Olympic Trials.
Mitchell was a three-time ASUN shot put champion, including the 2019 and 2021 outdoor titles and the 2020 indoor crown. His 2020 ASUN indoor shot put title came in a meet and Liberty-record 62-10.5 effort. However, the Liberty standard has since been eclipsed by one of the athletes Mitchell helps coach, Warren Barrett.
A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Mitchell earned the men’s shot put silver medal at the 2019 NACAC U23 Championships. He also represented Jamaica in the shot put at the 2015 World Youth Championships.
Mitchell also earned a pair of All-ASUN medals in the discus and owns a personal best of 172-7.
Mitchell graduated from Liberty in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and added a master’s in business administration in 2022.
Mitchell is married to former Liberty All-American women’s hammer thrower Jocelyn (Williams) Mitchell.
