Juan Taylor brings over 20 years of collegiate playing and coaching experience to Turner Gill’s staff at Liberty, having developed numerous standout wide receivers.
Liberty’s wide receiving corps just graduated the most prolific player in its position in program history. All-American wide receiver Chris Summers finished up his career at Liberty as the Flames’ all-time career leader in receptions (188), receiving yards (2,712) and touchdowns (26).
The All-America wide receiver posted his second straight 1,000-yard season in 2011, leading the Flames with 1,014 yards and seven touchdowns during his senior campaign.
Liberty’s top returning wide receiver is Pat Kelly, who had a banner year in 2011. The first team CoSIDA Academic All-American finished the year second on the team with 591 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Taylor comes to Liberty after serving five seasons on staff at Buffalo, including the 2006-09 campaigns under Turner Gill.
During his five years at Buffalo, Taylor served as the Bulls’ wide receivers coach before taking over the additional responsibilities of passing game coordinator in 2010.
Taylor helped convert former quarterback Naaman Roosevelt into Buffalo’s all-time receiving leader. The two-time All-MAC first-team honoree finished his career at Buffalo as the program’s career leader in receptions (268), receiving yards (3,551), receiving touchdowns (28) and all-purpose yardage (5,341).
Additionally, Brett Hamlin completed his career with 185 receptions, a mark that ranks third-best in program history. He also ranked Top 10 in both receptions and yards.
Before coaching at Buffalo, Taylor served two different coaching stints at his alma mater, Kentucky State.
During the 2004 season, Taylor served as tight ends and offensive tackles coach, after being running backs coach in 2003.
Shortly after graduating, Taylor began a five-year stint as wide receivers coach at Kentucky State from 1995-99, while also undertaking the responsibilities of the school’s Residence Life Director.
While at Kentucky State, Taylor coached four first team all-conference honorees, six second team all-conference selections and helped the Thorobreds win the Pioneer Bowl in 1997.
In between his two different coaching jobs at Kentucky State, Taylor owned and operated his own private business for five years.
Taylor was a standout wide receiver at Kentucky State, a Division II program, where he earned first team Black College All-America honors and Team MVP honors as a senior.
During the final three years of his playing career, Taylor led Kentucky State in receiving yards, receptions and scoring. He graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1993.
After graduation, he played professionally for the Milwaukee Mustangs of the Arena Football League.
Taylor, a native of Canton, Ohio, and his wife, Betsie, have one daughter, Kennedy.
