Andy Coleman is in his fourth year as a member of the Flames' football support staff. As academic advisor, he serves as a liaison between the football program and the academic campus and also aids in the day-to-day operations of the football office.
Coleman’s duties include monitoring the academic progress of each football student-athlete, assisting with the recruiting process by evaluating high school transcripts, coordinating on-campus visits and the admissions process for all potential freshmen and transfer football student-athletes.
Coleman’s academic endeavors paid dividends for several members of the Flames roster in 2008, as Colin Dugan, Ryan Greiser, Dan Pope and Kevin Richard each were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team. Additionally, Ryan Greiser and Mike Godsil were selected as member of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, as presented by the National Football Foundation.
As a whole, Liberty’s team posted one of its strongest team GPA in recorded Liberty Athletics history, while the squad’s APR score continued to improved for the third-straight year.
Coleman came to Liberty from Presbyterian Home and Family Services where he served as a middle school coordinator. While working at the Presbyterian Home, Coleman also served on the coaching staff across campus at Liberty Christian Academy. As middle school coordinator, Coleman was responsible for teaching, career planning and overall development of students with emotional and behavioral disabilities.
Prior to his time at LCA, Coleman served as a Special Education teacher and junior varsity/varsity football coach at Rustburg High School from 2002-04 and a Special Education teach and varsity football coach at Amherst High School from 2001-02.
Coleman served a six-month stint an as Special Education teacher at Heritage High School from December 2000 to June 2001, where he oversaw a caseload of 16 ED/EDHD students.
From October 1997 to June 2000, Coleman was at Appomattox High School as a Special Education teacher, where he prepared and implemented lesson plans for several grade levels in the areas of life services, physical services, civics, geography and life skills. Coleman also was a member of the varsity athletic program, serving as football defensive coordinator, assistant baseball coach and middle school basketball coach.
Coleman got his start in the teaching field as a Special Education counselor from August 1996 to October 1997 at Rivermont School.
Coleman is a graduate of Liberty, as he earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology and criminal justice in 1995, while receiving his teaching certification and special education endorsement from Longwood and Lynchburg College.
He completed his master’s of education degree from Liberty in May 2009, and is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in Sport Management. Coleman is an adjunct professor at Liberty in the Sport Management department, where he teaches two classes per semester.
Coleman served in the United States Army from 1992-95 and is still an active member of the United States National Guard. He is married to the former Jennifer McGlauflin, who is also a member of Liberty’s Academic Affairs for Athletics office. The couple has three children – Landry, Reagen and Evan.
