Aaron Stamn is one of several coaches who have served under Turner Gill at two prior programs, having previously worked under Gill at Buffalo and Kansas.
Stamn joined the Flames' coaching staff as Liberty's Co-Offensive Coordinator in January and was promoted to Offensive Coordinator and play caller following Liberty's second game of the 2012 season (Norfolk State).
The pair has been charged with overseeing Liberty’s highly successful offense, a unit that has ranked among the best FCS programs in the country in recent years.
Liberty’s offense has ranked inside the Top 20 the last five seasons in terms of scoring offense, including the 2009 season when the Flames led the country by scoring 36.36 points per game. The Flames also had the No. 3 ranked offense in the country in 2007 and 2010, with Liberty setting a program record by averaging 42.73 points in 2007.
Stamn’s direct position responsibility is one with which he is familiar when working under Gill, as he will oversee Liberty’s tight ends and fullbacks.
The tight end position has been a highly effective one of late at Liberty with a Flames tight end garnering all-conference honors six out of the last seven seasons. During the seven-year span, two tight ends earned first-team all-conference honors (Chris Luck in 2007 and Tommy Shaver in 2011).
Liberty’s tight ends have played a large part in the accomplishments of Liberty’s run game, with the Flames surpassing the 2,000 yard team rushing mark six times during the past 10 seasons. During the 10-year time span, Liberty has rushed for an average of 2,071 yards and 23 touchdowns per season.
Stamn served as Gill’s tight ends coach at both Kansas (2010-11) and Buffalo (2006-08), while also coaching Buffalo’s offensive line in 2009 during Gill’s last year with the Bulls.
During his previous five seasons under Gill, Stamn has had a tight end be on the John Mackey watch list, and nine times had a conference special teams player of the week.
During Stamn’s first season at Kansas, starting tight end Tim Biere led the Jayhawks with four touchdown receptions and ranked fourth on the team in total receiving yards. Biere was named to the John Mackey watch list during the 2010 and 2011 seasons and national tight end of the week against Oklahoma State.
Alonso Rojas, Kansas’ punter, earned All Big 12 honorable mention accolades in 2010, while Ron Doherty followed with All Big 12 punter honorable mention honors in 2011. D.J. Beshears received All Big 12 honorable mention accolades as a kickoff return specialist in 2010 after setting the school record for kickoff return yardage. As a team, Kansas finished the 2011 season with four blocked kicks.
Stamn first started working under Gill at Buffalo, quickly helping the Bulls gain respect at the FBS level. The 2008 season saw Buffalo capture the program’s first-ever MAC championship and advance to the 2009 International Bowl.
Stamn was also in charge of Buffalo’s special teams unit the first three years with the Bulls, as Special Teams Coordinator. Buffalo blocked seven kicks in 2006 and five more in 2007, while Stamn coached the program’s single-season and career scoring leader A.J. Principe and Ray Guy award finalist punter Ben Woods.
Stamn first worked alongside Gill at Nebraska when Stamn served as a graduate assistant during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. During his two-year span with the Huskers, Nebraska tallied a program-record-setting 50 sacks in 2005 and recorded a 32-28 upset of No. 20 Michigan in the Alamo Bowl.
Stamn began his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as a student assistant at Minnesota State – Mankato for two seasons (2000-01), while earning his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 2002.
After graduation, Stamn spent two years at St. Cloud State as a graduate assistant. Stamn worked with the Huskies’ defensive line and linebackers and helped St. Cloud State post a 16-6 overall record and finish No. 3 in the nation in rushing defense in 2002.
Stamn and his wife, the former Courtney Skelton, have three sons – Rylan, Jackson and Cooper.
