Aaron Fierbaugh helped Liberty to unprecedented heights during his first season on the Mountain at Co-Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach in 2023.
    Â
Liberty entered bowl season with a perfect 13-0 record and was one of four undefeated teams in the country, joining Florida State, Washington and eventual national champion Michigan.
    Â
Fierbaugh helped the Flames to an unblemished 8-0 regular season record in Conference USA and a 49-35 win over New Mexico State in the CUSA Football Championship game.
    Â
The team’s success positioned the Flames to receive their first-ever invitation to play in a New Year’s Six bowl game. Liberty squared off against No. 8 Oregon in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on January 1 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
    Â
Liberty’s defense proved to be very opportunistic during the 2023 season as the Flames led the nation with 21 total interceptions and ranked No. 9 in the country in turnovers gained (25).
    Â
Each turnover resulted in a viral celebration with the player who recorded the turnover wearing the famed Liberty Flames’ Joker mask while celebrating with his teammates and coaches on the sidelines.
    Â
The Flames returned two of their national-leading 21 interceptions for a touchdown in 2023, allowing Liberty to rank No. 29 nationally in defensive touchdowns scored (2).
    Â
While Liberty’s offense led the country in rushing offense (293.3 yards per game), the Flames’ defensive counterparts were just as tough against the run. Liberty finished the 2023 season ranked No. 24 in the country in rushing defense (116.7 yards allowed per game).
    Â
Under Fierbaugh’s leadership in 2023, safety Brylan Green ranked No. 6 in the country in total interceptions (5) and was named to the Football Writers Association (FWAA) All-America second team.
    Â
Fierbaugh came to Liberty Mountain in 2023 having already worked under head coach Jamey Chadwell when he was promoted to a full-time assistant coach in April 2022.
    Â
Fierbaugh was promoted to the inside linebackers coach after serving as a defensive analyst and assisting former linebackers coach Rod Wilson with the linebackers and defensive coordinator Chad Staggs in weekly game planning in 2021.
    Â
As an analyst in 2021, Fierbaugh worked with veteran linebackers Silas Kelley and Teddy Gallagher who both earned All-Sun Belt honors and led the team in tackles with 110 and 89, respectively. He also worked with the maturation of young linebackers JT Killen, Shane Bruce, Mason Shelton, and Kenny Byrd, as well as newcomers Tré Pinkney, Ze’Marion Harrell, and Bailey Carraway.
    Â
Prior to joining the Coastal Carolina staff in May 2021, Fierbaugh was a defensive quality control assistant at South Carolina from 2016-21, where he helped with opponent scouting, offensive breakdowns, and self-scouting. With the Gamecocks, he was part of three bowl trips in the 2016 Birmingham Bowl, 2017 Outback Bowl, and 2018 Belk Bowl.
    Â
As a student at Auburn, he served as a student assistant for four years, first working with the player personnel, special teams, and recruiting from 2013-15 and then the defense in 2015-16. During his time with the Tigers, Auburn played in the 2014 BCS National Championship game and made the 2015 Outback Bowl and the 2015 Birmingham Bowl.
    Â
A native of Fayetteville, Ga., Fierbaugh graduated from Auburn with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in December 2015.
