Matt Carpenter joined the Liberty coaching staff in August 2024 as Director of Player Development.
Carpenter is responsible for enhancing areas essential to player development on and off the field. Carpenter works with position specific growth plans, opponent scouting, practice and training organization, as well as data/video analytics.
Before coming to Liberty, Carpenter worked as a Baseball Development Associate with the Philadelphia Phillies from June 2023 to February 2024. Carpenter worked in collaboration with the coaching staff and Major League Hitting Strategy and Analysis on daily advanced video and analytic projects.
From April 2020 through August 2023, Carpenter worked as the director of player development/analytics as well as the volunteer coach at his alma mater, Ohio State. At Ohio State, Carpenter assisted in day-to-day responsibilities for team defense, team offense, scouting reports, and data/video analytics.
Carpenter appeared in 74 games as a Buckeye from 2017-20, playing mostly at second base. The former infielder was a member of the 2016 and 2019 Big Ten Tournament championship teams and was Academic All-Big Ten four times. His best season came in 2019 when he hit .257 with eight doubles and 25 runs over 42 games.
The Cleveland, Ohio native graduated from Ohio State with a bachelor’s degree in business finance and economics in 2021.
He currently lives in Lynchburg.
