Late Goal Pushes UNCG Past Liberty 2-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG Spartans broke a 1-1 tie during the 84th minute to edge the Liberty Flames in the Flames' first SoCon match in program history Saturday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Liberty scored the match's first goal in less than six minutes into the contest. Forward Pablo Matavale took away a pass to a Spartans defender near the top of the 18-yard box. He then moved past a defender and beat the UNCG goalkeeper with a shot into the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead.
Trailing at halftime, the Spartans evened the match during the 47th minute. However, after being held off by the Liberty defense throughout the rest of the second half, host UNCG found the go-ahead goal with less than six minutes left in the match.
Liberty pushed the attack looking for the equalizer but was held off by UNCG.
The Flames drop to 0-1 in SoCon play and 2-4-1 overall. The Spartans move to 1-0 in the SoCon and 3-1-4 overall.
