LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty Men's Tennis and Head Coach Derek Schwandt have announced both the team's 2026-27 fall and spring schedules. The program opens the spring season at Georgia Tech on Jan. 18.
"We are thankful for the opportunity to represent Liberty against strong competition all season," Schwandt said. "We challenge our student-athletes and coaching staff from start to finish, to improve and stay aggressive in our mentality, fitness and competition as much as possible."
The Flames aim to improve on a 14-10 record from last season that concluded in the team's third consecutive finish as Conference USA runners-up. Liberty returns six contributors from last spring while welcoming freshmen Owen Guistwite and Angel Veliz, along with a transfer addition, Nate Pitts (Clemson).
The team opens play this fall with the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. (Sept. 19-23). That same week, Liberty will compete at the ITF Futures in Columbia, S.C. The next week, the Flames will host the annual, eight-team, Liberty Dual from Sept. 25-27.
The Flames' fall season consists of six scheduled events, headlined by the ITA Atlantic Regional (Oct. 9-13) in Blacksburg, Va. Liberty will also participate in the Georgia Tech Invite (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) for the fourth consecutive season. The Flames hope to participate in the ITA Sectional and NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships to wrap the fall tournament season.
After opening the spring season at Georgia Tech on Jan. 18, the No. 3 seed Flames will take on No. 2 seed Charlotte in Columbus, Ohio, to open ITA Kickoff Weekend (Jan. 22, 23). Following the result of the match, Liberty will take on either No. 1 seed Ohio State or No. 4 seed Dartmouth.
The Flames (No. 19) will be taking on five teams that finished ahead of them in the 2026 ITA Mid-Major rankings. These programs include No. 6 Princeton, No. 9 Yale, No. 13 Old Dominion, No. 14 Charlotte (twice) and No. 18 USF.
Ten of Liberty's foes finished the 2026 season with an ITA national ranking, including six programs that advanced to the 2026 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship and three that claimed their conference championship title. Liberty will face the reigning victors of the Sun Belt (No. 51 ODU), CAA (Elon) and the Atlantic 10 (Richmond). The Flames will also face No. 13 UCF, No. 45 Yale and No. 37 Princeton, who all claimed at-large bids. They will also be matched up against No. 52 Charlotte (twice), No. 54 Georgia Tech, No. 58 Oregon and No. 60 USF.
Liberty will compte in the Diablos College Invitational hosted by Arizona State for the fifth straight season. The Flames went 1-2 at the eight-team event last season with a triumph over No. 64 Washington.
The team is set to take on four in-state rivals. Liberty went 5-0 in matches against Virginia programs in 2026, including a 4-0 mark against opponents they will meet in 2027 (ODU, Richmond, William & Mary and VCU).
The 2026-27 schedule consists of 22 total matches with nine home matches in addition to the three-day Liberty Dual tournament. Depending on weather, those matches will either be played at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center or the Liberty Tennis Complex. The Flames set off for seven true road matches with up to six neutral-site matches.
Liberty will take on a CUSA foe in the regular season for the first time since joining the league in 2023. The Flames will match up against Delaware in its final regular season tilt before heading to the 2027 CUSA Men's Tennis Championship (April 21-23).
