LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty will open defense of its CUSA championship as the No. 5 seed, it was announced Saturday evening. The Lady Flames will face No. 4 seed Sam Houston in the CUSA Women's Basketball Championship quarterfinal round for the second year in a row, Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Eastern.
If Liberty wins on Thursday, it would advance to play in Friday's first semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Eastern, with No. 1 seed and regular-season champion Louisiana Tech the most likely opponent. The title game is set for Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern.
All tournament games will take place at Propst Arena in Huntsville, Ala., for the third consecutive season, in conjunction with the CUSA Men's Basketball Championship. The championship game will air on CBS Sports Network, with all other women's basketball matchups in Huntsville set for ESPN+.
The Lady Flames (17-12, 11-7 CUSA) will arrive in Huntsville as one of the conference's hottest teams. First-year Head Coach Alexis Sherard's squad has won three straight and eight of its last 10 to finish the regular season in a tie with Middle Tennessee, Missouri State and Sam Houston for third place in the CUSA standings.
Liberty and Sam Houston (18-11, 11-7 CUSA) will square off in the CUSA quarterfinal round for the second year in a row. The Lady Flames topped the Bearkats 78-51 in 2025, taking the first step toward their inaugural CUSA title. Liberty is looking to advance to the semifinals of its conference tournament for the ninth year in a row and the 29th time in the last 30 seasons.
Liberty is 5-1 all-time against the Bearkats, but the one loss came in the teams' only meeting this season. Sam Houston topped the Lady Flames 59-53 in a defensive struggle at Liberty Arena on Jan. 8, spoiling Liberty's CUSA home opener.
