LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty midfielder Clarisa Iudicello received her second BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to Iudicello's recognition, sophomore Diane Saint Martin and junior Josefina Tomasi were tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. This is the first time this season the Lady Flames have featured three weekly award winners.
Iudicello, a native of Córdoba, Argentina, had another strong weekend in wins over Old Dominion and Richmond, leading the team in assists (2) and points (4) and sharing the team lead with one goal. This is Iudicello's second BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award in the last four weeks. She earned the award on Sept. 15 as well.
In Sunday's 2-0 road victory over the Richmond Spiders, she tallied one goal, one assist and three points. Iudicello scored the first goal of the day, her team-leading eighth of the campaign in the 14th minute on a feed from Julieta Tornati. In the 20th minute, Iudicello set up fellow freshman Pia Iapichino's goal, sending a pass into the circle that Iapichino one-timed past the Richmond goalkeeper.
In Friday's 2-0 shutout win over ODU, the Liberty rookie notched an assist on Luna Prieri's goal in the 14th minute, which proved to be the game winner. The midfielder broke through the Monarchs' defense and sent the ball to an open Prieri, who evaded ODU goalkeeper Alexa Murphy and sent a reverse shot into the cage.
In 11 games this season, all starts, Iudicello leads the team in goals with eight and points with 18. The freshman ranks 28th nationally in goals per game (0.73) at present.
Saint Martin, a goalkeeper from Paris, France, posted a perfect 2-0 record, 0.00 goals-against average, five saves and one shutout last weekend. The netminder made four saves in the 2-0 road win at Richmond, posting her third shutout of the year and 11th career clean sheet in the process. Saint Martin made three of her four stops in the second half, including back-to-back saves in the 39th minute that preserved a 2-0 Liberty lead.
In Friday's 2-0 triumph over ODU, she made one save in 59:40 of action while not surrendering a goal. Liberty has four shutouts on the season following the back-to-back clean sheets this past weekend.
Tomasi, a forward from Cañada de Gómez, Argentina, recorded an assist and a defensive save in two matches. Last Friday, she tallied an assist and five shots (four on goal) versus the ODU Monarchs. Her assist came on the Lady Flames' second goal of the afternoon at the 22:30 mark. Following an ODU turnover, Tomasi found Avery Pollock in front of the cage, and Pollock ripped a shot into the right side for her second goal of the year.
In Sunday's 2-0 blanking of Richmond, Tomasi made her team-leading fourth defensive save of the year on a Spiders 51st minute penalty corner. Tomasi and the Liberty defense fended off seven total Richmond penalty corners as well as two from ODU on Friday while keeping their foes off the scoreboard for 120 total minutes of action. Tomasi leads the BIG EAST and ranks fourth nationally in defensive saves (4) this season.
