Note: Below is the main feature story for this home football game's edition of Flames Illustrated, Liberty's home football game day program.
Â
As I enter my final year at Liberty University, the journey has been nothing short of remarkable.
Â
I have seen us find a FBS conference home, was part of our first CUSA Championship team and been a part of three-straight bowl games. I even got to experience Liberty's first-ever New Year's Six bowl game appearance against a national powerhouse like Oregon.
Â
Throughout my time here, I've been fortunate to experience the highs and lows that come with being a dedicated athlete, but it's all been worth it.
Â
This season, my personal goals are within reach, especially earning All-America honors once again. I achieved this milestone during my sophomore year, and I firmly believe that with dedication and hard work, I can do it again.
Â
However, what truly drives me is the team's success.
Â
Winning another conference championship and playing in another high-profile bowl game are goals that would elevate Liberty University to new heights on the national stage.
Â
It's not just about individual achievements, but about putting Liberty on the map and showcasing the talent and dedication within our program.
Â
Doing my "1-11"
Â
One of the key philosophies I hold dear is the concept of doing my "1-11."
Â
In football, there are 11 players on the field, each with a specific job. If I can focus on fulfilling my role and ensuring that the other 10 players do the same, we can achieve greatness as a team.
Â
It's about being accountable and trusting in each other to execute our assignments.
Â
When we all do our "1-11," we become an unbeatable force on the field.
Â
As I reflect on my legacy at Liberty, I want to be remembered as someone who was always there for my teammates and gave it my all on the field.
Â
It's not just about the stats or accolades; it's about the relationships and impact I've had on my fellow athletes and the Liberty community.
Â
In a world where players often seek new opportunities through the transfer portal, I've chosen to stay loyal to Liberty.
Â
This place has given me everything I need to succeed, both on and off the field.
Â
The resources, connections, and sense of belonging I've found here are invaluable.
Â
It's a decision I made with careful consideration, and I believe it was the right one.
Â
Choosing Football over Baseball
Â
Choosing football over baseball was a difficult decision for me.
Â
Baseball was my first love, and I had dreams of playing at the next level. However, injuries and the incredible success I experienced in football led me to make a business decision.
Â
It wasn't easy to give up a sport that brought me so much joy, but I trust that God has placed me on the right path.
Â
The transition from baseball to football wasn't without its challenges.
Â
Baseball requires a level of dedication and time commitment that many don't fully understand.
Â
It was a sport that allowed me to be free and escape from the pressures of everyday life. But in choosing football, I found a different kind of fulfillment and purpose.
Â
I've been blessed with a strong support system throughout my journey.
Â
My parents, coaches, and mentors have played a significant role in shaping me into the student-athlete and person I am today.
Â
They've taught me valuable lessons both on and off the field, and their guidance has been instrumental in my success.
Â
One piece of advice that has stuck with me is to never put all my eggs in one basket.
Â
My father always reminded me of this, especially during my recruiting process. He encouraged me to explore different opportunities and not limit myself to one path.
Â
This mindset has been crucial as I navigate my athletic career and prepare for life beyond football.
Â
Family and Mentors
Â
My parents have been my pillars of strength, instilling in me the values of being a great human and a great man.
Â
They have supported me every step of the way, ensuring that I have everything I need to succeed.
Â
My high football school coach, Trev Faulk, taught me the right way to play the game and imparted valuable life lessons.
Â
My uncles, Levar Gauthier and Paul Barbour, played significant roles in shaping my baseball skills, which have also benefited me in football.
Â
These individuals have come together to guide me on my journey and teach me the importance of perseverance and dedication.
Â
Balancing Football and Future Aspirations
Â
Looking ahead, I have a clear plan for my future.
Â
While football will always be a part of my life, I know it won't last forever. I have aspirations to pursue a career in real estate and take over my parents' businesses.
Â
They have their own contracting and pharmacy enterprises, and I hope to continue their legacy and expand those ventures into chains.
Â
It's a way for me to give back and ensure the financial stability of my family.
Â
As I enter my final season at Liberty, my focus is on putting my best foot forward and leaving everything on the field.
Â
I want to show scouts and future employers that I'm a smart player who always gives 100 percent effort.
Â
I strive to be the quarterback of the defense, ensuring my teammates are lined up and ready to execute our game plan.
Â
In doing so, I believe I have a strong chance of making it to the next level and continuing my football career.
Â
In conclusion, my journey at Liberty University has been a testament to the power of dedication, perseverance, and faith.
Â
I've had the privilege of representing this university on the football field and leaving a lasting impact on my teammates and the Liberty community.
Â
As I prepare for my final season, I carry with me the lessons learned, the support of my loved ones, and the determination to achieve my goals.
Â
Liberty will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am forever grateful for the opportunities it has provided me.
