LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty Men's Tennis and head coach Derek Schwandt have announced the program's 2025-26 fall and spring schedule. The Flames open their spring season at Auburn on Jan. 17, with their home opener against Gardner-Webb and Richmond in a doubleheader on Jan. 24.
The Flames look to improve on an 11-13 record from last season that concluded in the team's second straight finish as Conference USA runners-up. Liberty returns five contributors from last spring in addition to redshirt freshmen Ben Sparks, Guy Vorwerk, along with the recent addition of David Ekpenyong (Our Lady of the Lake).
The team opens play this fall with the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. (Sept. 20-28). That same week, Liberty will host multiple visiting teams at the Liberty Dual (Sept. 26-28). The fall season consists of six scheduled events, headlined by the ITA Atlantic Regional (Oct. 9-13) in Blacksburg, Va. Liberty will also participate in the Georgia Tech Invite (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) for the third consecutive season.
Liberty looks forward to a testing spring, facing four programs that claimed their conference title last season. The team will face the winners of the Big South (Gardner-Webb), the Sun Belt (Old Dominion), the Atlantic 10 (VCU) and the Coastal Athletic Association (UNCW). Including Auburn and Oregon, six opponents appeared in the 2025 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship.
The Flames' 2026 opponents collected an overall 251-199 record with a .558 winning percentage last season. Nine of Liberty's foes finished the 2025 season with an ITA national ranking, including six programs in the top 51.
The team is set to take on four in-state rivals. Liberty went 4-1 in matches against Virginia programs in 2025 with its lone loss at Old Dominion, a 4-2 defeat.
The Flames look forward to avenging eight defeats, holding a 5-8 record against programs it met last spring. For the third straight season, Liberty will not play CUSA foes in the regular season.
The team's spring schedule consists of 10 home matches and 13 road matches. The team will also participate in four neutral-site matches.
After opening the season against Auburn, Liberty will travel to Georgia Tech a second time for a dual match on Jan. 19. The Flames meet both programs for just the second time in program history and seek their first victory against both.
The Liberty Indoor Tennis Center hosts the next three matches, starting with a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb and Richmond on Jan. 24. The Flames welcome Penn to conclude the home stretch on Jan. 30.
The Flames prepare for a pair of cross-country trips, first travelling to Eugene, Ore., to take on Oregon on Feb. 14 and Portland in a neutral-site match on Feb. 15. Two weeks later, Liberty participates in the Arizona State College Invitational (Feb. 27-March 1) for the fourth straight year. Their opponents at the invite will be announced later. The Flames are 4-5 all-time in the tournament. They went 2-1 last season with wins over UTSA (4-0) and No. 68 Utah State (4-1).
Liberty returns to Lynchburg for a three-match home stretch to face Georgia State (March 6), William & Mary (March 8) and Tulane on March 13.
The spring season comes to an end with seven matches against programs the Flames took on in last season. The team takes on Charlotte (March 22) on the road before they head to Florida to meet USF (March 27) and FAU (March 29). Liberty will host Old Dominion (April 2) and Elon (April 4). The regular season concludes with road matches at VCU (April 9) and UNCW (April 11).
The Flames conclude the 2026 spring season at the CUSA Men's Tennis Championship hosted by Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tenn., from April 17-19.
